Seige Mentality

Posted by Partlycloudy on August 18, 2008, at 9:59:06

There's a storm approaching and we are doing our preparations for it. Put up our storm shutters, bought two years ago but have had no need of them until now. We wouldn't be going through this process right this moment if my DH wasn't going out of town tonight - but I'm kind of glad that we're doing it. It took 2 hours to shutter our two sliding glass doors :-/

I have water, flashlights, batteries, ice, crank-powered radio, prescriptions, gas in the car. The cat and I are booked into a hotel on higher ground if we're to be evacuated (you won't need to tell me twice).

Yesterday I looked at the enormous coffee table book, "After The Flood", I have that recorded the devastation that Katrina wrought on New Orleans. Although this storm is nothing as powerful, the visual reminder of nature's power was something that helped spur us into taking the precautions that we've done so far.

I took a Xanax too. Will use them as I need them.

I am optimistic that this exercise will be our practice drill - that Fay will pass us by as so many other storms have done in the past. We've been lucky, nothing but lucky, so far. But this is the first time I've taken the preparedness steps seriously.

I keep recalling your experiences with Katrina. I believed I've perfected catastrophic thinking at this point!

I know. :(

My brain tells me what a very rare occurrence it was, and that it wasn't even directly caused by the hurricane but by engineering failures.

Still, whenever I see a tropical depression, I start packing up my photos and checking my gas tank.

It doesn't hurt to be prepared.

PC I think your're safe as the last I heard the storm was verring off to the East which means it will be on the Eastern Coast where My Daugher is but she going out of town and won't be there. She seems not to care from past storms. Husband isn't there either not far away but is getting some help but haven't heard in over a week. Good to be prepared though as there storms do all sorts of funky things heading our way for the end of the week. I almost hope it washes away the unsold condo we have at the beach as for sale for two years. And to think a first floor we waited for three years for they are not fancy. But at least then we'd get the value I think??? Phillipa wishing you the best of luck.

There's a mandatory evacuation order for my area that goes into effect tomorrow morning at 6AM. I am happy that we got our home as protected as we possibly can. My step daughter is safely with me. We're going to have ourselves an adventure tomorrow.

p.s. my head is hurting - this is migraine weather :-(

Oh no,
You are where the hurricane might hit.
I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers.
May this storm pass right over you and you all be kept safe.

Peace
Chelle

:(

I'm glad you have a hotel room set up. I don't know how clogged traffic gets where you are, but make sure you've got all the necessities with you.

Fortunately most evacuations are just an exercise in frustration and annoyance, except for older people.

I'm not great at praying, but I'll pray for you and for all in the path of the storm for a safe and relatively uneventful evacuation and a swift return home.

Is there anything you can take for your migraine?

I had some Maxalt left over that nipped my headache in the bud. Unfortunately, my preventative medication is en route via snail mail from my pharmacy :-(

Thanks for thinking of me.

PC really the news is portraying it as nothing here and a lot of rain and showing reporters on the beaches of Sana Belle Island????? Love Phillipa. Why not leave now?

This morning - nothing :-)

We don't have to go anywhere - the storm zipped east instead of north as it was thought it would. This was good practice, as I said. I'm very relieved.
