I'd say white with black stripes. IIRC, the belly is white.

Yup white with black and a white belly. Only reason I know is that an item of clothing for ebay has a zebra on it how convenient. Phillipa

Somewhere deeply buried in my knowledge banks is an answer to that question. But the only part I can access is that it's not the one you would think it is. At first glance, I'd say I'd think it was white with black stripes, so that would mean that it's actually black with white stripes.
However, that is a very dangerous way to remember things, because eventually you start remembering it the correct way, then apply the rule and answer wrong. I can't tell you how much trouble this has caused with my husband's birthday.
So... If I haven't subconsciously now remembered the right answer so that the rule of "not what you'd think it would be" is wrong, then I'd say it was black with white stripes, because my kneejerk response would be white with black stripes, and I know that my kneejerk response is incorrect.

I found this on the internets
"Zebras are black with white stripes. If you shaved a zebra, you would see that its skin is black( Knoxville Zoo)."
but really, who shaves a zebra?

I asked my gray and white tabby cat, who is a stripe expert, and she just licked herself and gave me a look like "who cares my stripes are superior."

According to this site, zebras are dark animals with white stripes, although I find only argument (2), of the three given, convincing.

or do you truly ponder this question?in case you do...
I'd say it's all about your perspective, maybe it's neither!

I would like to thank you all for your enlightening answers. This question has given me much to think about.
As for the origin of the zebra's stripes, I think we need to keep an open mind on this. I'll leave it at that, but I think you all know what I'm talking about...

Yes. Oh, yes.

No. It's just something I have wondered about lately. Perhaps not as fancy as your question about the meaning of life, but still...

I must be exceptionally dense, because I must confess that I don't.
But then I'm being even more dense than normal today in general.
You know how the ancient Egyptians thought a runny nose was brain leaking out? (Or so I've heard anyway. I don't know if that's true or not.) Whenever I have a cold, I think they might have been on to something there.

It is unusual to find such peculiar geometric patterns in nature as the stripes of equus quagga -- or to call it by its colloquial name -- the common zebra. I therefore think we need to accept the possibility that zebras may be extraterrestrial in origin.
