Music fans, a question.....

Posted by Glydin on March 25, 2008, at 18:56:22

I need some help with a strange question. Can anyone affirm for me they do indeed know who Neil Young, yes, the musician, is?

Since I'm getting commentary from a source implying that is should be unusual to know who Neil Young is... is it so bizarre for one to know who this music icon is?

How old is this 'source'? If they're young you might tell them Wikipedia calls him: "the godfather of grunge ...By 1990, grunge music was beginning to make its first inroads in the charts and many of its prime movers, including Nirvana's Kurt Cobain and Pearl Jam's Eddie Vedder, cited Young as a major influence."

If they're too young for a grunge reference, just smack em.

The source's age shouldn't be a factor, in fact, I think it should be a big reason for them being aware of who he is.....

Perhaps it's just showing my advanced age, but Neil Young is considered in my book to be an icon of the rock genre. Some might taint him with the "folk-rock" brush, since he was in Crosby Stills Nash and Young (that would be CSNY) but he was the backbone of the group.

Rust Never Sleeps.

Oh, and of course, he's Canadian.

Not unusual at all. I'm 43 if age matters...

Perfectly usual, as far as I know.

Although, seems I recall, years back, I didn't really know who he was when others seemed to, and only learned through the controversy around the lyrics to "Sweet Home Alabama."

But I think that's 'cause I was a only child, a bit nerdy, somewhat sheltered, tomboy mixed with bookworm kind of person, growing up, and just missed being exposed to some stuff my peers knew....

Perhaps the source just has some odd "knowledge gaps" in that area? I know I do. Not that it's any of my d**n business!! just thinking aloud......

The 'real' issue

I really don't have a problem with what any one or so persons don't know because, well, you don't know what ya don't know.

More at hand seemed to be a focus on: "I asked so and so and they don't know either" and "I asked so and so and they too don't know".... it began to feel a bit like a digging at me in a an attempt to just prove me wrong. Maybe not the intention but that IS what it felt like to me.

I have no problem being wrong as maybe more often than not I can be but I REALLY did not believe I was wrong on this one.

Also, this person, from time to time, seems to enjoy disputing me over things. Again, I think that might be "normal" and of some's nature but sometimes I just tire of it.

Vent over... thank you all for your responses.

Hi Glydin,

I definitely know who Neil Young is and I have the albums and CDs to prove it.

Naturally one knows the first 6 or so albums, but what was he doing after the 70s?

Is Trans any good (for example)?

I know the recent stuff. Well, what I mean is I know Greendale.
