Should I see a shaman?

Posted by Sigismund on March 12, 2008, at 18:07:15

I was speaking to my doctor the other day about our 'Enhanced Care Package', wondering with what or in which direction I needed to enhance myself.

I asked for a referral to a psychiatrist (being of a conservative persuasion) but he suggested I go a different route.

I then asked him, on a hunch, if he knew any shamans. He said he did, a wonderful one, trained in South America somewhere (not just a lot of hallucingens) though not available on the NHS through an Enhanced Care Package.

I am worried that a shaman would demand that I dance.

What should I do?

My first therapist saw a shaman of her own, whom she consulted for her own issues. She would, from time to time, share with me some of the rites and rituals that she learned from her. If I'd had the opportunity, I certainly would have augmented my own treatment with such a person.

I say, if you are able to do this, jump on it, with your mind wide open. (That sounds awfully vulnerable! - but the possibilities are right there for you to explore - fantastic!)

Maybe I should take dancing lessons first, (or anyway). But I draw the line at Salsa, and especially Tango.

Maybe I could learn to jive?

it is my understanding that the "macarena" relieves stress and anxiety.

KK suggested I take that up ages ago, but I have not followed her advice.

Sounds interesting Shamons are healers arent they but I'm not familiar with their rites. Didn't know you had to dance. Love Phillipa

I'm just worried about dancing generally. I'm told that most Australian men do not like to dance, which is almost enough to get me doing it.

I read that there is music of worship and music of dance, and I thought 'Well that explains the decline in standards there.'

I liked those Pink Floyd/Grateful Dead kind of evenings where there was absolutely no question of anyone dancing (or doing anything much).

I quite liked being in the choir...you had your place up the front, wore cool vestments, and only had to walk around and look holy, apart from singing.

i think your decision to not do the macarena is wise unless you wear cool vestments and look holy.

Our former treasurer did the macarena on daytime TV.

No link available on youtube unfortunately.

Fortunately though we have a new government led by Kevin and Wayne.

Somehow more Australian than John and Peter.

Nah, she just said she wanted to see me doing it.

I'm the world's worst person for that sort of thing.
How am I supposed to know what to do?
I want everything well planned out in advance.
David Byrne, (who had a touch of something like autism) wrote in
'Heaven'
There is a party
Everyone is there
Everyone will leave
At exactly the same time.
It's hard to imagine
That nothing at all
Could be so exciting
Could be so much fun
Heaven is a place
A place where nothing ever happens.

i hope you're nto suggsting i offered you any sort of dance tips!!! i'm really VERY VERY VERY serious when i say i can't dance. i think the best impression i've seen of my own dancing in steve martin in 'the jerk' (i think he and i would make a great couple and he's a GREAT banjo player... hmmm....)

i honestly get flustered when attempting to do the wave. get a few drinks in me though, and i don't seem to care how bad i am. i know i'm awful, i jsut don't seem to care!

declan, if i didn't have about 1000 pending proposals out there, you know what i'd ask you :) i'm off to email steve martin now!

oh, and if you get any good hallucinogens, do send some my way! i'm in desperate need of a good buzz!!! I'M serious!!!!

toodles,
kk, the worst dancer in the world

Okay Dec,

Now the BIG question.

Were you serious??

I was so hoping that you were & that the world of medicine (at least SOMEwhere in the world) was coming into some sort of state of wisdom in that they'd see going to a shaman as a very wise, healing thing to do!!!!!!

Or were you just trying to startle us into posting!!! If so - thanks 'cuz we did!

luv ya, Kath

Hi Kath

I'm too slack to see a shaman.

I approve of them, I think they are great, which is easy because I know so little about them.

Interestingly, from "One River", those amerindians who had NO contact with 'western "civilization"' only knew about maybe 30 medicinal plants.
The ones who had had any contact with WC (dear me) knew far more because they were so much sicker, and needed the plants as medicine.
Those people might have known thousands of plants and more combinations again.

I wouldn't mind one right at this moment.

I'm still considering going to Peru for one of those Ayahuasca healing sessions. It may seem unwise after my psychotic episode, but what I experienced sounds so similar to what people describe in 'Aya' visions. I think I just need to complete the process that was interrupted by psychiatry.

I believe there is a shaman called Ross Heaven operating somewhere down south, then there is another just a short boat ride away in Ireland.

Really happy to see you here, Quintal. I've been wondering where you might be.

I have a concern about shamans. I lived in New Mexico for ten years and visited there for 20....

Shamans are known, there, for charging alot of money and not really telling you anything new.

Several of the ones that I knew had moved there from Europe and evidently knew a good thing when they saw it.

People in NM are sometimes abit naive when it comes to guidance from someone posing as a shaman/medicine man/guru.....(they are naive, in my opinion, because they have moved there from other states and have expectations that the native New Mexicans do not possess)

xoxoxo Pat
