missing things

Posted by angela2 on November 13, 2007, at 22:11:06

Has anyone here ever had a hobby when they were younger and then for some reason or another stopped doing it? And miss it now?

I used to dance as a kid and teenager all the way up until college. Then I stopped. And I can't even think of the reason why. I really miss dancing. And I think I'd like to start doing it again.

not a hobby, butttt....

i miss that buzz you get from spinning round real fast and stopping. my son just learned to do that, and gets the goofiest grin on his face, even when he falls down.

and playing nonstop, without worry of making dinner on time, or car payments, or bills, or bedtime, or waking up (this could go on forever)... oh, the simple joy of magnets and dancing doras and exploring the couch (as yucky as that is for adults! i just found hotdog chunks, hair balls, cereal and odd assortment of toys underneath. he seems to think they're snacks for when he's hungry???? blechy!)

and learning new words. and mimicking (not so cute when adults do it, but adorable when kids do). and being able to walk up to ANYONE and get a bite of their food (try it. it doesn't work for adults....). and he takes adult bites, just like his mom :)

i wish i was a kid again! but if i were to spin in circles, i'd fall and break my hip (see, kids aren't hypochondriacs either. they can't say it yet!!).

wishing she was 1.5, such a great age (and boy oh boy are they so full of energy!!!),
kk

Angela, I danced professional until I had my daughter. I was put on bedrest due to high risk pregnacy. I was still dancing at 6 months but that was the end of that. I had only gained 3 lbs. I remember being in the waiting room next to a woman who had swollen ankles and wrists and she asked me my due date. Turns out she was due after me and she looked about three or four months further along than I did. After that she kept giving me dirty looks. I couldn't help that she retained way more fluids than I did....lol anyway, I quit dancing after that and I miss it tons. Today my son asked me on the way home if I could be any thing in the world what would I be and I said a professional ballet dancer. That is what I was before my daughter was born. I miss it tons!!!!! Oh well....you should take lessons.......go for it . It will help you tons...........rk

wow rk, that's so cool! I danced with a local ballet company in 8th grade through 11th grade. I don't know if it was professional, it wasn't like, american school of ballet or anything, but we had to work our *ss*s off! I live in the same house that I did when I was dancing with them, and it is right around the corner from where I live. They offer adult classes so I might go back just to check it out.

I have a slightly different problem. I find my interests have changed. I recently reentered a hobby I've had since I was twelve or so. Well over thirty years. And I find I'm having trouble sustaining interest in it. It's so strange. It has been part of me so long that it's part of my self definition.

Maybe it's time to change my self definition.

I'm finding that about a lot of things. My priorities have changed, although my behavior is taking a while to catch up.

I took up another hobby and I am not sure I like it. How do you know when to give it up. It is something my daughter and I share but now that she is gone to college I find I don't seem as enthused about it? I am clueless about what to do. Does this mean I did it just because she loves it or do I reallly love it and my head is too messed up right now to really wrap myself around it. I don't know right now. I guess though since I am in a depressed state I should not make a decision. Right? rk
