Anyone familiar with Photoshop?

Posted by Dinah on November 12, 2007, at 11:47:21

I just switched after having used a thoroughly out of date Microsoft Picture It for six or seven years. And I'm unbelievably confused. Is there a good guide to figuring out how to work it?

Picture It was likely more limited in what it could do, but it sure was intuitive to use. :(

:)

Yes, that's the sort of thing I was interested in.

My son has a newfound interest in photography, and I'd like him to be able to process the photos he takes. I'm not sure his interest is strong enough to figure out how to use a complicated program without some rewarding fun in the process so I'd like to be able to show him how to do some things.

You might check out "Photoshop for Dummies" (not that you're a dummy)
Most of the "For Dummies" series is pretty user friendly. You can probably find it online used for cheap.

Thanks, Kid.

Actually, for Dummies sounds about right for me with this type of software. :) I was wondering if I'd bit off more than a kid with a developmentally appropriate attention span would wish to chew.

I use Microsoft PhotoDraw. It's old and I got it free with a copy of Frontpage back in like 2000.

I have tried PhotoShop and I couldn't figure out how to do anything on it I couldn't do on Photodraw. I'm sure there are many features I didn't see, especially with the newer versions, but I have mastered PhotoDraw so well over the years I can seemingly do anything with it. I'd rather have a weaker program I have mastered, than a powerful program I cannot utilize.

What do you want to know? What version do you have? Are you on a Mac or PC?

I definitely agree with you, and maybe that's the direction I should go. My thought was that I wanted my son to learn the industry standard when he learned the first time. And at 11, I'm confident that he can learn it. I guess I need to make sure he enjoys learning it.

I'm on a PC, and I have Photoshop Elements 6, I think.

I'm not sure I have specific questions. I think I was just asking for ways to get started to learn it. The Dummies book seems like a good way to do it.

Or maybe I just was looking for reassurance that it wasn't too hard to learn, and that once we get used to it, it won't be so scary.

Try this:

Scroll down to "See how" movies

I can't pull it up because of my insanely slow connection, but these are usually pretty cool.

And now I also know of a resource I didn't know of before. :)
