Flying again Sunday!!

Posted by Phil on May 11, 2007, at 9:53:42

When you're down in the dumps
And taking your lumps
With depression, bipolar, and what-not

Remember your bliss
Could be as close as a kiss
And nothing in the world will stop you
_______

Flying may not be all plain sailing, but the fun of it is worth the price.

Whenever you look at one of those "special" paper bags... with the waterproof lining... and the coffee bag closing... think of me as you soar! Or hurl, in my case :-)

Enjoy

Hi Phil:

You are doing something I have always dreamed of. I wanted to be a commercial airline pilot..get behind the wheel of a 747 or a Concord...whooo hooo. I'd hope they atleast have good 'air-bags', say incase I took a wrong turn or somethin'...heheee. :) I have to ask though, I don't mean to be negative, but are you on psych meds still? I thought that was a no-no for pilots. But, considering they give jet fighters amphetamines, and pilots drink lots of coffee...hmmm. Well, let us know the fun you have. :) "My wildest wish to fly.."

Jay..Go to airliners.net and key in 747 cockpit(or anything relating to planes) and they have great pics. There's a Concorde cockpit on the first page there today.

I'm not going for my license so they don't know I'm on 4 psych meds. If I went for my license, I'd take the FAA physical 'first' cause bipolar can keep you from flying. I'm not sure if bipolar II would or not. The FAA is goofy so who knows?

Right now, what they don't know won't hurt them.
They tell you what to do and it ain't that difficult. If I screwed up, there's a very experienced pilot right next to me.

You might consider going up. For $50.00, it's a bargain.

ps Jay..I'll always be on psych meds. (nm)

FAA says you can't fly. I'm earthbound.

I guess I'll weave baskets. Yeah, I'll just weave baskets.

U.S. Says 46 Pilots Lied To Obtain Their Licenses

Recently, the news has covered the case of 46 pilots who are being charged by prosecutors for "lying to federal authorities to obtain airplane licenses." This coverage is relevant to not only bipolar disorder but also to other mood or brain disorders. The pilots are being accused of hiding "debilitating illnesses" which, if revealed would have "kept them (the pilots) grounded."

that is an eye opener for sure. egads. about to rant but will save it for later. wonder how other illnesses/diseases/disorders are treated by FAA?

It's not that cut and dried, Phil. Although the regulations state that a diagnosed bipolar is to be denied a medical airworthiness certificate on the initial medical examination, the final decision is deferred to a medical review board. Stable bipolars can be granted a special authorization certificate.

The complete psych considerations are in this document, beginning on page 115: http://www.faa.gov/about/office_org/headquarters_offices/avs/offices/aam/ame/guide/media/guide06.pdf

ADD, personality disorders, anxiety, psychosis, can all ground a pilot. But, it depends. Interesting the way they lump licit and illicit drugs together in one list, but:

"The use of a psychotropic drug is disqualifying for aeromedical certification purposes. This includes all sedatives, tranquilizers, antipsychotic drugs, antidepressant drugs (including SSRI's), analeptics, anxiolytics, and hallucinogens."

If a pilot is off them for three months, a certificate can be issued.

Surprisingly, pilots with serious heart disease can often still fly.

If you'd like to read the rules themselves, there's a link in the post right above this one.

Thanks Larry, I think I'll just stay on the ground.

I'm on just about all of those. No hallucinogens though cause I can't find any.
