Do you ever wonder where those expressions come from? I mean 'whoops a daisy?' how on earth does something like that get passed down from generation to generation

No worries Gabbi, but thanks for taking the time to post this. It made me feel better. And HF made me smile, she always does.

OK - how about chocolate all around, and we move on?

I read today in our paper about local parents who lost their son at VT. It made me cry. I am humbled by their loss and pain. It makes my friends even more important to me.

a sad sense of feeling defeated or vanquished; sorta giving up.

sometimes I sigh when there's just too much pressure in my lungs and I realize that I've been holding my breath.

It's kind of like forgiveness in a way. too much pressure of anger and resentment. and then [whoosh] it feels... okay...

That's what I sigh means to me

-Ll

p.s. ice cream has gotten so expensive nowadays. I shopped at the poor-peeples grocery store though and found it on sale 2 for one.

p.p.s. That means ICE CREAM FOR EVERY ONE. limited flavors though. peppermint stick. and light vanilla (for my continuing smoothie experiments)

p.p.p.s. I thought it was oopsie daisy. kind of like the opposite of ring around the roses.

p.p.p.p.s. I did not mean to infer that bubonic plague is at all similar to the daisy's opposition

p.p.p.p.p.s. I've probably offended someone by now. That means a new cycle of grumpiness and misunderstanding has started. maybe it will be resolved by forgiveness and understanding, though. would be sweet.

Okay, now I'm curious I'm going to see if I can find the origin of oops a daisy or whoops a daisy or oopsie daisy, I wonder if it's an english interpretation of synonymous word or expression from another lanuage. Hmmmmm
I hope it's not as morbid as Ring a roses.. or ring around the rosies, or ring around the roses.. shall I stop now. Yes I should fall down I think

Though I found the origin of "whoops" interesting

From http://www.straightdope.com/mailbag/mwhoopsadaisy.html

With all respect to our British cousins, we think getting into a dither about "whoops-a-daisy" bespeaks a pretty low threshold of madness. We have taken the liberty of delaying our reply in hopes of toughening you up. If you think whoops-a-daisy is madness-inducing, wait till we drag you into a war with Iraq.

Alas, as with many etymologies, there's a lot of uncertainty. Terms such as "up-a-daisy" dates to the early 1700s, as an encouragement to a child who has fallen to stand up, or as an exclamation upon lifting a child. It's basically a nonsense phrase, presumably intended to amuse the little ones. Variants include "upsi-daisy" or "upsy-daisy" from the 1860s as well as "upsa-daisy" . . . any of them with or without hyphens.

The first use of "whoops-a-daisy" per se is around 1925, in a New Yorker cartoon. It's an expression of surprise or dismay, specifically upon discovering one's own error. The modern-day equivalent would be "D'oh!", I'm afraid, which is much less expressive. The term was shortened to "whoops" by 1937, and appears in that form in a letter by Ezra Pound, no less. One assumes that it was related to the expression "to whoop," as in giving "whoops of joy." That usage goes back to the early 1600s.

There were times I think the site truly saved my life as well.

I too am out here in the west; not usually any1 on huh?

But, the strangest thing, was coming to the para, where you wrote, you felt like saying, 'can't we just all get along', because I'd just typed it and was ready to push the submit button, but said to myself 'oh no .. that's too stupid', just 2min before reading your letter here! Unreal!
