Don't rely on other people to get what you want out of life

Don't rely on other people for your happiness either?

I'm afraid not.

If someone offers something of value to you (love, friendship, etc), allowing it to add to the happiness you already give yourself, that's great, and a big plus.

But I wouldn't recommend living each day with your only source of happiness coming from others. I learned that the hard way. =( Right now, I can honestly say I'm not self supporting in terms of happiness. Luckily, I have a friend who cares about me and gives me enough happiness and love. But if our friendship faded away (and it already has a bit), I would have nothing. I don't recommend others living like this.

Every time I rely on others for something, I get burnt. I've learned not to rely on others. I'm not saying I'm 100% self supporting yet, but I'm moreso than many because of this lesson I've learned. I know the "movie-happy ending/storybook" version of life says you can rely on others, but in reality it's not like that.

i don't think i've learned a thing. if i have, i've forgotten it. george washington was the first president of the usa. i remember learning that once or twice.

i know people have told me not to gossip, but i haven't learned that.

don't tell people things you wouldn't want everyone to know, but i haven't learned that yet.

don't sh*t where you eat, but i have failed to learn that one. (not literally, but i've been known to get drunk too...)

yeah, i'm sticking with the george washington one.

ok, i thought of 5:

you can never hold a child too much.

marry for love.

always talk to strangers.

never use verizon for internet service!

always flush twice.

how's that?

I can't say I've 'learned' them, in that I'm still in the process of learning them. I think they're worth learning though.

If you make a mistake, or something unpleasant happens to you in life, it's not wasted if you can learn something from it.

You create your own reality (I'm not a fanatical believer in this. I don't think I can create a new car coming to me if I want one etc. But I think that if we think positively & expect good things & expect good from people, it's more likely to happen.) Boy, am I still learning this one.

How about you? What have you learned?

K

No matter how awful you feel, burying your face in a shepherd's ruff and pouring out your woes helps at least some. They're really great at making sympathetic noises.

Cuddling with other dogs also works well.

apparently, a Buddhist monk, (How do I know this? From a magazine. Who says? Science...anyway...) was asked how he found it living in unpleasant places. He gave the example of Old Delhi, which he said was a bit rough, and said for him it was like the weather being different.

I have learned a few things over the years.

1. The Hundred Years War lasted 116 years, from 1337 to 1453. (Don't ask me -- it was on my mind last night...)

2. The best cure for an upset tummy is Stewart's Ginger Beer.

3. When knitting back and forth on a color pattern, it's often easier to cut the yarn and go back to the beginning than it is to try to purl with two colors. Even though it takes forever to weave in the ends.

4. Kittens often change sex before they grow up -- OK, really it's just really hard to tell the sex of a kitten under about two months old.

5. Most horses are left dominant, but many Thoroughbreds are right dominant.

6. It's not accidental that my mother always says, "C'est le guerre," and not "c'est la vie."

6.a. Mother's sig line on her email -- "If at first you don't succeed, destroy all evidence that you tried" -- reflects her philosophy of life.

7. When Dorothy Parker said that 'if you spit on a pencil eraser, it'll erase ink,' she was discussing real ink, fountain pen ink. That little trick doesn't work on ball point pens.

8. Sometimes the best treatment for anxiety is to lie on the sofa with a quilt over your head. It works even better if you have a cat handy.

How's that? Do I get a special prize for having come up with so many? Or is that typical "Dang, that Racer sure is long winded..."

nice responses :-)

I have pondered this subject as of late....

I have learned that tomorrow comes too soon
that I've got a lot to learn
that it is a real challenge to live well
that I've suffered a lot
that I'm pretty damn persistent (sigh)
that for all the hoping, some things never come
...and that a lot of other things come your way, some not so welcome, and some things better than expected
that I like to write my random impressions
etc., etc.
;-)

One? Maybe two is the new one.

1. This too shall pass. (Philosophical variant of: Nothing is constant except change.)

2. The punchline for this one, also a variant:

God, grant me the serenity
To accept the people I cannot change
The courage to change the people I can
And the wisdom to know that person is me

Best,
Lar

EVERYTHING is subject to change based on new information.

Information is "good" or "bad" based on YOUR interpretation.

When you point a finger at someone else remember that 3 are pointing back at you.

There are more floating in my head but I can't catch them

Hi KK,

I don't believe there is an official ruling on being dense, but then again that rule book is updated so often it's hard to say.
