I cried in a store today

Posted by scratchpad on March 20, 2007, at 13:16:06

Haven't done that for a long time. It wasn't over the prices, or my size. Not being on a mood stabilizer puts my emotions back where they used to live; plainly on my face. I cried because I couldn't find my receipt for an exchange - it ended up being in my pocket. Such an inconsequential thing :-(
I even got the poor saleswoman weeping. It was so embarrassing.

I'm definitely running the gamut of emotions lately... and wondering if it's time to take another pill, or see if I modulate myself eventually. It's so nice to be rid of the side effects of Lamictal (chronic constipation, loss of sense of smell, and the general flatness the medication caused). It also felt "wrong" to take something that made me less of myself. I do feel emotions strongly, and Lamictal turned down my volume. I just don't know whether I should accept being a crybaby for now, or run back to the doctor.

Well, you'll just have to see how it goes, there Ms. Scratchy. : )
If you're like me, the nosedive usually continues in various ways and I go back on the meds pretty quickly.
Hope you have better luck.

Scatchpad did you finally make the exchange and then what happened? Were you able to calm down. You know I know it isn't funny at all but the picture of the saleswoman crying too is too much. I hope you feel better now. Love Phillipa

No, I just said that I was really embarrassed. And I kept apologizing. Actually, I blamed the mascara. "I never cry unless I'm wearing mascara," were my words.

I made the exchange (for something that fit me much better). Afterwards, I sat down with an iced decaf latte until I got myself somewhat together. Then I checked my face for makeup slug trails, made the necessary repairs, and got back to shopping.
Found a pair of shoes after this. I declared the trip a draw and headed home.

My heart goes out to you. I spent a good day out in Montreal crying. I was so horrified, but I couldn't stop it. My mom was also pretty embarrassed. It was only like 6 months ago.

((((SP))))

But I am glad you found some shoes and got your clothing exchanged.

I do that in book stores these days. People think I'm nuts. I've taken to mutter, "such a sad story" -- at least a few people shake their heads knowingly.

I'm glad you found shoes. Makes it all worth it!!

I've cried a lot in public too.

The way you handled it though is very impressive. You didn't "give in" to it. You completed the transaction, got yourself together and went out and out and bought a pair of shoes (a joy in their own right).

I had a bad habit of just letting it snowball into an all day crying session.

I don't know the whole story, but based on the way you handled this situation, I think you may have the coping skills to handle it without drugs for a while.

Why don't you just rack it up to drug withdrawal? Does it help a little bit to blame it on the drug, via rebound?

I hope you're feeling more clear skies, soon.

I would LOVE to blame it on the drug withdrawal!! That feels like it's not as much my fault. My therapist says I'm going through sobriety angst. That also sounds cool. "It's not me, folks, it's a chemical thang!"

Thanks, it's a stormy morning so far. Climbing back under my covers for the day. Maybe I'll bake some scones - I've been promising myself scones for weeks now.
Better living through kitchen witchery.

I hope so, Maddie. My body needed a break. It does feel like I've turned up the volume on my emotions by doing so.

What? We're not supposed to cry in stores?

What about parking lots? Church? Banks? Walking down the street? Work?

sheesh...who knew?

Hey - I'm an international weeper. Counting the countries on both hands by now. And I'm a non-discriminating weeper. I can, and have, cried in most public places. Most noteworthy:

Immigration at Heathrow Airport, being deported from the UK

Parking garage at federal building in Boston, after being escorted by men in guns when my preemptive citizenship interview was ended. The parking lot attendant didn't want me to drive away as upset as I was.

Getting a blue preboard card at the SouthWest Airlines gate because ptsd was triggered going through security.

The world is a giant receptacle for my saline 'n snot.

Notable places where I have wept openly

Please note, this list is not exhaustive and includes only those places in which I think weeping occurred without cause, or weeping without cause (WWC).

Airports:
Orlando
Boston
Detroit
Oaklahoma City
Atlanta
Manchester

Recreational Facilities - "alleged fun" places
The San Diego Zoo
Sea World

Local Establishments
Pharmacy
Grocery Store
Irish Pub (I wasn't even drunk yet)
Burrito Bunker (it's as bad as the name sounds)
Department Store

Misc...
Music related (I used to be in a band)
Recording Studio
Various Gigs

Work Related
Stairwells
General Work Environments
At the copier and/or printer
In my boss'office (numerous numerous times)

Home related - situation specific
Lost eyeliner
Screen door wouldn't close
Brief Power Outage

As I said, this is list is no way comprehensive. But the good news is - I feel a lot better now. And the WWC's have significantly decreased.

Maybe it's not all that bad to be a crybaby for a bit.

I think that if more people were 'real' in public, it'd be a better place. Of course, I guess if they didn't tone down their anger that wouldn't be good.

Anyway, being teary isn't the worst thing in the world. Maybe bringing up the emotion of compassion in others isn't a bad thing. Now, of course, some people might not be compassionate.

love, Kath

Convenient, isn't it, since I do it so often and so well...whatever that means! Wish we didn't have to (usually) feel so cr*ppy to be doing it, though :-(

Here are 2 links on crying:
http://www.crying-survey.co.uk/
http://www.edwardwillett.com/Columns/crying.htm

The first is actually a survey from the U.K. Maybe it's old now, but I took it recently. Kinda interesting - I'd like to see the data once they have more compiled. (careful....the questions, by asking you to think back on when, where and why you cried, could be triggery to some...)

The second one is just a general article on human crying I've had saved on my PC for some years.

Wish I could learn more about tears of joy. There seems to be less understood about those than about any other kind.

Sure, why not? I've probab;y done it! (nm) » Kath

I wrote:
'I've pro'baby done it.'

well, I am pro-baby :-) or............
Maybe I'm around the grandchild too much :-)

2-month old babies do tend to make you think of crying....about them when you think too much about the future, scary things, protecting them, about or with them when you're exhausted and can't calm them, over them 'cause they are just soooooooo beautiful and sweet.

or is it just me?

Great links! Thanks, 10der. I really only started crying about 10 years ago. I wish I felt better afterwards but I'm usually just embarrassed. My eyes and nose immediately swell and sometimes it takes several days for it to go away.
