How do I tell a potential Date about past..?

Posted by Jay on February 25, 2007, at 19:08:22

...That I've been emotionally f**ked-up for the past 7-10 years, and that is why I haven't had much of a 'life'?
:-/ She asked about this time-frame, and I really don't know what to say. It really hit me hard today, and made me very depressed about, well, *everything*...a future, and in particular, having any type of meaningful romantic relationship.

Jay how long have you known her and how many times have you been on a date? I'd let her decide if you are okay or messed up to her. You don't have to tell her anything in the beginning of a relationship. Love Phillipa

Phillipa is right, there's no need to go in great detail if you aren't ready to. Just because you had a bit of a 'wilderness' for those years doesnt mean your future has to be the same. The fact that you have this new friend surely is a positive step for you?
Maybe you could just say that you had some bad experiences a long time ago and that you took a step back to take time for yourself. But that you are pleased to have now met her and how great that feels to you. You dont have to go in to details if you dont want to. If she presses, you could maybe say that you'd rather leave that for another time, you'd prefer to focus on the future?
Best wishes
Jo

I wouldn't say anything in the beginning stages of your relationship...Let her get to know you first. If she pushes, i'd say something like. "I've had some personal health problems...i'll tell you more about them later." Hopefully, she'll respect that and you can tell her about it slowly..a little at a time. Good Luck.
