No Springfields in Australia

Posted by Declan on January 19, 2007, at 20:32:12

A sense of fatigue seems to have come over the Europeans who gave names to Australian landmarks.
So many Lake Disappointments, Mt Miserys, the tiredness implicit in Snake Creek, you may have heard of Useless Loop, and up in the Pilbarra someone actually called a mountain Mt Nameless.
I don't have the enthusiasm to assume any interest in this; I had enough trouble typing it out.

It feels weird for me to live in a place where towns are named Treasure Island, Winter Haven, Paradise Island. We even have have a Hollywood.
I'm a traitor for feeling depressed living here.

That is one of the reassuring things about living in Australia.

But just up the road we have the Gold Coast, Florida Gardins, Miami Keys, the whole lot. We preserved our sense of (fragile) Englishness by pronouncing Miami 'meeaaami', which worked when we were 10.

Florida has great names. Sanibel Island, Isamaralda in the keys, Panama City, Jupiter, Hollywood Beach and the Treasure Island. Are there shells there? Love Phillipa

Ismaralda is pretty cool (nm) » Phillipa

Freycinet, a peninsular on the east coast of Tasmania has so many shells.

It makes me wonder if all beaches used to be like this before we got to them??

The beach IS more or less shells, all sorts, oysters and univalve shells, the ones like huge snails and conches. Quite something.

Wasn't that the twin sister on 'Bewitched'?

Or was it an Aunt? Awww, the seventies, so murky and nostalgic. Shrinky Dinks, Slinkys (that never went downstairs like on tv), Chinese Checkers, Pick up Sticks, 'CHiPs', Bay City Rollers, and record players that folded up into a little suitcase like things.

Sorry, off subject.
