I hate fruitflies

Posted by llrrrpp on June 14, 2006, at 21:18:36

It's that time of year.
leave the window open and the little beasties are among us.

I try to take care of matters when there is only F1 generation.

by the time the F2 generation arrives 10-15 days later, there are problems. hundreds of problems

Speaking of flies...

I was totally freaked out today! I found 6 gigantic flies on the window. At first I was smacking them with a flyer, but then I decided that sucking them up with the vacuum cleaner was much more efficient. Then I opened the blinds to the other window and imagine my horror when I discover about 20 flies! Aaahhh! They must be hatching indoors! I hope they haven't laid their eggs yet. I know they mate only a few hours after they emerge from their pupal stage.

Fruit flies I can deal with, flies on the other hand are scary. I got over my fear of fruit flies in my genetics class.

Thanks to my biology lab, I will never be able to forget how disturbing it is to watch a fruit fly lay an egg. (The fly in question was drugged and so wasn't having too easy a time of it.)

I once supported a huge infestation by leaving a potpourri pot unattended for oh, well, let’s just put it at quite a while. It took forever for me to figure out where the ---- they were all coming from after I had used my best efforts to find and irradiate them from all possible sources.

They are hardy and prolific creatures.

In my biology lab, we had to anesthetize the poor buggies with fly-nap (ether). one guy was carrying the beaker of ether, uncovered, succombed to the fumes, dropped it somehow, swooned and we had to evacuate the lab. it was a good time for all. I guess even the guy who swooned. he was declared a hero.

3 cheers for ether!

We didn't use any ether. We used CO2 and ice. It worked pretty well, most of the time, as long as we put them on the ice right away.

I never got to see a fruit fly lay an egg, cool. I wish I got to see that.

We had to dissect out the salivary glands of the larvae to see their giant chromosomes. Good thing my hands weren't as shaky back them.

Oh, my. I've also had some accidental multi-generational breeding experiments happen in my kitchen. Actually threw out a stainless steel trash can rather than scrub the little b*stards out of there one more time. And I'd rather not even talk about the rice cooker incident.

It's stuff like this which almost makes me regret not going for the BSc psych and neuro program at this one university. Almost.

We used something called fly nap in our class... I don't know what it was composed of exactly, but it was supposed to be less drugging (for humans) than ether. Let me just say that I wasn't too intent (or was I?) on finding out what actual ether did. Not a good condition for manipulating tiny creatures with pointy objects. We also killed a few from having left the fly nap in too long. Oops.

We used flynap in some classes and ether in others. the flynap is messier, the ether is dizzier. Just the smell fo that stuff gives me headaches nowadays. ugh!

The worst fruitfly experience ever was when lab partner tried to dump the test tube upsidedown to get the flies out, and instead created a mini-landslide. Fermenting banana goo overcame a colony of sleepy fruitflies. Search and rescue operations took place under the stereoscope. We managed to save enough of them from drowning not to repeat the lab (this was week 3 of the breeding experiment)

Hmmm... That's scary. They came in from the attic last year. The tape around the attic door is still there. I hate to think of what they were up to up there.

They look so much cuter under a microscope. Or in a vial. Just not flying around like that. :(

Where you able to get rid of the fruit flies llrrrpp?

I just found out where all the houseflies were coming from and it wasn't pretty. It turns out there was a dead bird in our fireplace. It had been there a while. Yuck.

I'm pretty sure that they hitched a ride on my roommate's potted plants. The population has dimished significantly since taking out the trash every 2 days and doing a couple loads of dishes.

dead bird, eh?

yuck.
