dandelion day

Posted by Larry Hoover on May 10, 2006, at 10:02:20

Spring advances a little later, way up here. Just one of those signs of spring. Today is the day that all the dandelions decided to smile. I bet there is a line, across the whole continent, marking the dandelion bloom. Today, that line is here.

Cooool.

Our spring flowers already bloomed and are hanging dead and shrivelled. My orchid tree just finished blooming, although the poor thing is dying, half ripped from the soil during Katrina and awaiting the tree company to put it out of its misery. What a valiant last show it put on though, even while its leaves are withering. Our crepe myrtles aren't quite ready yet but will soon burst forth all summer.

"Popcorn popping on the [crepe myrtle] tree!"

That's a nice image, Larry. Thanks.

If there is a line, it goes right between my neighbor and I. Our houses are set quite a way back from the street, so the front lawns cover a bit of area. Mine looks like part of a manicured golf course (no thanks to my green thumb), his looks like a wild meadow. Thousands of dandelions on one side of the drive, and zero on the other.

I've stood out front this week trying to figure out which lawn I like better.

I just noticed the dandelions too. The first dandelions always looks the best. There aren't so many of them that it overwhelms the grass.

That's not dandelion day, yet, Deneb. It might be tomorrow, though, because you're just a touch cooler there than here, climactically.

DD isn't the first dandelions. It's the most.

I've been contemplating that as well.

I can't help but think that the pretty yellow color is so cheerful that I don't care that they are weeds...

You know what's even prettier than dandelions?
A lovely feral green monk parakeet eating them, or maybe a little posse of a dozen exotic birdies chowing down on them. squawk.

They are pretty, but I don't like when my neighbors don't spray and they seed into my yard...oh, well. Thanks for a glimpse into your mind.

My aunt used to tell the story of how she got her house. I'm not sure we have dandelions, but when she was looking at houses she fell in love with hers because the front yard was carpeted with daisies (not the real sort, I imagine the southern equivilant of dandelions). She didn't dare tell her husband that, so she came up with lots of sensible reasons why this home was the best one. The weekend they moved in, he came in proudly and informed her that he had mowed down all the weeds.
