How Many People In the States Don't Celebrate Than

Posted by Phillipa on November 21, 2005, at 11:16:03

Please relieve my guilt. How many of you don't cook Thanks giving or don't even celebrate it in the USA. Not cooking so feeling guilty. Fondly, Phillipa

No need for guilt! Many grocery stores sell turkey that is already cooked. Pick it up, heat, and eat! Many times I have gone out to dinner instead of cooking. (Tips from a woman who seldom cooks!)

Best,
EE

We are celebrating it, but I'm not looking forward to it.

I love Thanksgiving- it's my favorite holiday ( I think because there is not as much pressure with money; gifts, etc..).

BUT Jan, one year when my dad was very sick, my mom and I were too tired to cook- we ordered a Honey Baked Ham, picked up a bunch of sides from KFC and pies from the grocery store.

We still had a great time.

Don't feel guilty- I'm sure everyone has years like this.

Don't think of it as a celebration like we acknowledge a birthday, our country's independence or surviving the past year Phillipa, it's more of an occasion to share with anyone you care about thanks that things aren't a whole lot worse. You can even do that by yourself.

I thought you meant because of the Indians.

The whole thing about the Pilgrims and everything is such a farce. What was done to Native Americans was atrocious. That makes me feel guilty to be celebrating.

That's what I think about too.
Well, that and William Burroughs
"A Thanksgiving Prayer"

I give thanks for that poem : )

(I'm actually planning to get a Hormel turkey package with gravy, and some Country Crock potatoes. Shhhhhh......)

Yeah, I guess I should qualify that too!

I don't think anyone who is celebrating thanksgiving is giving thanks that the land was brutally taken from the Natives! It's a time to appreciate what you have.
It's, like Texas Chic said, just the first thing that crosses *my* mind.

I've always had issues with the Pilgrim association and this holiday, too. It's really politically incorrect!! I prefer to celebrate and give Thanks for all the gifts that life gives me. Like I shouldn't do that every day!!

we have it backwards..

HE says we should have Thanksgiving 364 days per year and have one day set aside to moan, gripe, and complain.

Don't think the thought didn't occur to me. But then I figured the fates might decide to give me something to feel sorry for. :)

I was speaking to someone else today who lost everything. And again, they found some reason to feel lucky. In comparison I have every reason to feel grateful that I got off so lightly.

(But I don't want to! It's not fair!)

Hey everyone today my Daughter decided to cook a turkey, stuffing , vegtables, salad, rolls, all kinds of dips. And she assigned us the task of getting a pie, vanilla ice cream chocolat ice cream and whipped cream. So we found a good bakery and bought a pecan pie. She specifically said pecan or apple. And she said it would be at our house. How's that for taking control? Fondly, Phillipa

Yeah I figured you probably have enough people around you (and your own brain) telling you that there are many people worse off than you are.
But I wanted to be the one to say..
"Dammit, you've had one b*tch of a year.. enough already!"

Thank you » Gabbix2

Seriously, you don't know what a gift it is to be given permission to feel rotten. As I type this I'm watching a segment on the local news of people standing amid wreckage and talking about all they're grateful for on this Thanksgiving.

I know I am supposed to be moved, but mainly I'm angry about it. Sigh.

My head is about to burst. My husband's grandmother has had another crisis, and my husband's going to have to go up to see her again. I generally don't mind, but I was hoping with all my heart that this wouldn't be a weekend he had to do that because I have a deadline Monday or Tuesday and I'm working around the clock. I could just cry. Or scream.

I'm not feeling like feeling grateful at all, except that I don't want the fates to give me something to feel really sorry about.
