Anyone Else Been Getting Wierd E-mails?

Posted by Phillipa on October 7, 2005, at 18:49:22

When I go to my mailbox I keep getting these names I've never heard of and strange sentences that sound the middle of a conversaiton with another person. If I look at properties and send something to that address. It always comes back saying it doesn't exist. What in the World? Fondly, Phillipa

Do the emails seem babble-related? If so, you should report it to Dr Bob.
(no I haven't received any weird emails myself.)
Maybe you have a virus?

Maybe it is email spam.

Since I don't know a lot about computers what is E-mail spam? And what is the purpose of it anyway? Just parts of a conversation. And we have a virus protector too. Fondly, Phillipa

The parts of a conversation doesn't sound like spam. I don't know what that is. But spam is when you get emails from a weird email address saying multiple things. Examples: you've won a car, take viagra, Christian dating, and other stuff you just don't want in your email in box.

I used to get a lot of spam like that but I think my spam filter catches most of it now. I don't even look at or preview suspicious mail anymore.

I noticed that the stories or conversations used lots of uncommon words that didn't fit the context. Verbs didn't really fit the subject and so on. Seemed to also have more words with good scrabble letters like "q", "k", "x", "j", and "z".

I never did figure it out and still wonder what the purpose was.

That could very likely be a virus. You should never open anything that's from someone you don't recognize (at least, that's what the experts say - easier said than done I know). Especially don't open an attachment. Viruses usually have attachments and alot of times they end in .exe. Your virus protector should protect you pretty well, but they can't cover everything.

What is wrong with these people anyway that send out viruses?!?! I just don't understand what they get out of it.

The odd characters and wording are attempts to get through the spam filters.

Hi Auntie Mel,

Do you know the answer to the following?
There's one vendor that somehow got me e-mail address and they keep sending me spam that has odd wording in it. The messages also have different e-mail addresses each time even though it's all from that same place. It doesn't pay to block them because they just use a different name next time. It really makes me so angry. Is there any way to block this company besides changing my e-mail address?

Delete them immediately and don't open them. The act of opening them tells them they hit a target and a valid email address.

They are using spoofing if they are using different email addresses. Not anyone you *ever* want to do any business.

You can also forward them all to spam@uce.gov. They've been trying to crack down on spam.

What if it's not a vender but just someones name and then the middle of a wierd conversation. In order to delete them you must click on them and that shows you what it says. No attachment. Fondly, Phillipa

You don't have a check box to delete email without opening them? That must be annoying. How about a bulk mail box or spam filter?

Phillipa -

If you have Windows Outlook Express try this out.

1. Open Outlook Express.

2. Click on "View" on top taskbar.

3. Scroll down to "Layout" and click on it.

4. Uncheck box next to "Show Preview Pane"

From then on you can delete messages without viewing them by right clicking on them and clicking "Delete".

I've always preferred not having the preview pane because it takes up so much space. And doesn't it open the first email as soon as you go to the Inbox? Been so long I can't remember exactly why I got rid of it.

Thanks so much. I haven't been opening them. I just delete them. I used to block them but gave up on that. I definitely wouldn't want to do business with them even if they were legitimate - the harrassment factor alone is enough of a turnoff for me.

I'm a little concerned about sending a government agency my e-mail address. Am I being paranoid or do you think that there are some valid concerns there?

Thanks,
K

The govt could get your email if they wanted. I wouldn't worry. They are probably getting deluged with enough spam that they don't care who sent it.

I just sent them another one today.

And I'm one of those super-security-private types on the net.

Ok, great. I'll send it to the gov't and maybe they will get rid of this scammer. I'd sure love to get rid of the constant messages I'm getting from them. Thanks again!
