It's where I've always wanted to move.

I was born and raised in Huntsville, Alabama.

It's a wonderful place to live. I miss home terribly. My entire family lives there now so if you decide to move there, I'm sure they'd love to have you visit.

And then whenever I go back to visit, I could visit you as well!

The Space and Rocket Center is there (Space Camp), Nasa, Marshall Space Flight Center, they have a really neat downtown (Big Springs Park), and the oldest Historic District in Alabama ( Twickengham).

You'd love it.

Okay, now I am sooo homesick.

*weeps*

oh and don't forget.. the best food in the South!

They have the best barbecue in all the south!

If you move there, take me with you.

*WAH WAH WAH*

Space camp. My youngest went there. Twice.

We always flew in for 'graduation' and spent a few days. Lovely.

But you forgot about Helen Keller's home.

And I would swear (in hindsight) that the guy next to me at the Marriot bar was the guy that blew up the Olympics and the abortion clinics.

Spriggy, was your family okay during the hurricaine? Is it inland or near the water? I never took geography. Fondly, Phillipa

No, Helen Keller's home is in Tuscumbia..

It's about an hour or so from Huntsville. I can't remember exactly, last time I was there was on a field trip in the 6th grade.

But yes, it's worth the drive for sure!

Philipa, my family are far enough north that Hurricane didn't really effect them- Huntsville is in Northern Alabama (about an hour south of the Tennessee border).

They just got lots of rain and thunderstorms.

:)

If I lose my therapist, the only possible recourse for me is to move I think. And I fell in love with Huntsville over twenty years ago when I visited a friend there. I loved the section of town with the old homes.

I subscribed to the newspaper several years ago when my husband's job looked iffy. It sounds like the only local natural disasters are droughts, mudslides, and tornadoes? Does that sound right?

I know the public schools are great there, and the area has become a high tech area with decent jobs.

I think I might visit there a few times in the next few months.

It's really scary to think of going home. If it weren't for the fact that Huntsville is too far away to drive to see my therapist, I think I'd refuse to go home at all.

Dinah,
If you decide to go there, I can give you a name for a wonderful psychiatrist (or do you only see a therapist?). Anyway, this doctor has been a lifesaver for my family (he has seen my grandmother, now my mother and father).

Anyway, yes, Huntsville seems safe with natural disaster's minus the occasional tornado. We had a big one hit in 1989.

If you haven't been there in a few years, you will be surprised at how much it has grown. Every time I go back ( I usually go home once or twice a year), I am just amazed at all the new building and businesses.

Yes, the school system is good- "South" Huntsville is notorious for excellent schools. If I moved back, I'd make sure my kids' were in that section.

I miss the South. I miss Alabama. I miss Huntsville.
*sniff* I am about 2200 miles from home. I've been here 7 years now (south of Seattle) and although it has "grown on me", it will never be "home."

If you go to Huntsville, please let me know. I'll tell you some good places to visit (especially restaurants).

Hi Dinah,

How are you doing? Are you back home yet or are you still in the hotel?

If you really think you might not have access to your therapist, there are too many of them in New York. I know a few really good ones, although it took me years of trial and error to find them. Would you consider moving to New York?

Wherever you are now, I hope you and your family are comfortable and back to a routine.

Sarah

Dinah, I don't know anything much about Huntsville, except I grew up 1 hr. north of there, in a little town on the TN side of the state line. That general area of the country has THE nicest people, some really good food, and relatively few natural dangers. Like Spriggy noted, tornadoes might come through- maybe a little one every 5 years or so, and if you are too near the river you might get flooded. But it is a BEEEYOOOTEEFULLL place to live. My parents and inlaws still live in my small hometown in TN, so I am back that way often.

Mal- what part of Tennesee is it?

I probably drive through your hometown because when I fly home, I actually fly into Nashville and drive to Huntsville. (much cheaper).

Just curious. It might be one of our pit stops.

I'm in your home city!

It's nothing like I remember it from my last visit in 1977 or 1978. lol.

I'm going to look tomorrow for the section that I remember. I think I'm in a newer area.
