Right now I'm not doing any. I used to read magazine articles for the blind an hour a week the last time I took time to do volunteer work.

I foster kittens until they are ready for adoption.

The little bitty ones (that need bottle feeding) come to me.

That's terrific! How many do you foster at a time?

That's similar to my long term volunteer goal. To take dogs that aren't readily adoptable because of lack of training and train them.

Unfortunately, I don't think I'm all that good at it. :(

I used to volunteer on a psych ward in a hospital. Mingling with the patients. They would confide in me but then I'd have to tell staff what they said. That was how I got into nursing. Fondly, Phillipa

I volunteer at a health sciences library and a consumer health library (in the same building, but separate) for a total of about 5 hours/wk. The hospital that runs them has a lot of volunteers.

I.

In the past, I've volunteered at a shelter, and for political parties, and at my church. Also a few events and one time type things. I found that it really caused me a lot of anxiety, unless it was very well structured, and only the political organization was well structured. The other volunteer work I did were more or less disasters, because I'm too passive to structure my work well in an unknown situation.

I do better with administrative work, which I've also done for a few organizations, but oddly enough never consider it volunteer work. Although I didn't get paid. And they were official charitable organizations. That can also be nerve wracking in a different way.

Of course, my nerves are rather bad.

I for one have never done too much volunteering, but I have always wanted to. (sounds lame huh that i wanted to but haven't yet) I have ALWAYS wanted to work at a soup kitchen in my area on Christmas. Rather then relish in my own comforts I'd like to help others enjoy a day that isn't filled with all the comforts afforded to me. I'm doing it this year! Thank God my boyfriend supports the idea, and is all for it.

This kitten season I had a litter of four and then the one I have right now - a lone little girl found abandoned at about 8 days old.

Last year I had another litter of four.

I mainly do the bottle babies. There aren't all that many of them so I'm not inundated. But when I do get them it's a night and day thing.

The really little ones even need help to "go potty."

This reminds me of my mother's feeling inadequate relative to my paternal grandmother, who was very active (or so I'm told, I was very young) in church and volunteer activities. My mom told her she felt bad that she did so little herself and my grandmother told her she never really did anything either when she had kids living at home. My mother had five children; needless to say that doesn't leave a lot of time for anything else!

Even if you are busy there are still dozens of acts of charity you can perform every day, without formally putting in hours "volunteering."

I am the sponsor of the majorettes for a local highschool. (lots of work)

I find that people with depression/anxiety are the sweetest people. We are also very smart.

Maybe if we didn't know so much, we wouldn't worry so much. lol

Dinah, when I read your post, it hit me that I also need a volunteer job that is structured and not disorganized. I get easily overwhelmed. I considered helping out with Special Olympic events but then thought all the people and chaos when get to me. I think I'd be better one-on-one or doing administrative type work. I'm also too passive and need direction -- why I could never be self-employed.

Hey, Phillipa -- Did you ever feel a tad guilty about telling staff what patients said to you? I know you had no choice, but I'm just wondering. After my hospital stay, I obtained my medical record and was dismayed to read what staff wrote about what I said to them (I had no idea everything was recorded).

Sonya, yes, terribly guilty. I knew what I said would affect their tx. And they had some music that sang of suicide so i even reported that. They took away that music. But how did you get your psych records? I was alwsys told you could only read them with your doctor present as it might be harmful to you. Fondly, phillipa

I know watcha mean. I usually go out of my way to make people feel good, (smile, ((hey a smile goes a long way in my book)), hold doors, say how are ya, offer help when others haven't...that kinda thing.

I called the Medical Records dept of the hospital and inquired about the procedure for obtaining my record. They sent me a form which I filled out and returned. It took a few weeks, but I got my complete record in the mail. And, yes, I must say it's disturbing to read. Even after all this time, I still get very nervous every time I read it; and I don't know why I read it as often as I do (strange).

I work (paid) in a library. We love volunteers! Most come for 2 hours a week, but a couple come for 6 hours a week. Each library would be different, but in my library volunteers can do just about anything they are capable of doing. We like to have them man the desk - checking books in and out. Or shelving. Or helping to process new books (put date due stickers in, put tape over the spine labels, stuff like that). Or check to see that the books are in the right order. Or straighten the books on the shelves. Or put clear covers over the dust jackets.

Good luck!

LOL we raised service dogs for awhile, now i'm not doing it because i'm raising kids! 2 of the dogs flunked - anybody want a dog? they're beautiful!

when we were doing the sd thing, we had puppies in the house a lot, the ones waiting for the families who were going to raise them, come and get them. we also doggie sat while ppl went on vacation. it was fun, but a lot of work.
i volunteer some at the kid's schools. and b4 the last child came along, i used to take the dogs to pre-schools and alzheimer's facilities.

I've got a dog now that would be absolutely ideal for therapy dog work. She's unflappable and obedient but also friendly and outgoing. Wheelchairs or machines don't bother her a bit.

But I don't have the time or the sustained energy. :(

Dogs like that are a blessing, and after all you've been through lately you deserved to be blessed with another good one. I know you'll both love each other.

Pssst... Don't tell anyone, but I have an abnormal liking for neurotic dogs. Although my two favorites would have tended towards excess confidence. ;)

I enjoy the moderate well-balanced and happy dogs. But I rarely fall in love with them.

Lynn you are so correct on that! I've been told that I shouldn't say this, but sometimes, I wish that I wasn't so nice or had the know how to do things; b/c I feel that I am held responsible for too many things; or rather dumped on due to my knowledge and abilities. Sometimes, I wish that my life was so simple; but it is my own issues that have made it feel so complex - which is how I get so stressed and depressed...
