I got stared at

Posted by Deneb on July 27, 2005, at 20:41:46

Did I tell you here that I changed my "passion red" strand of hair to "UV purple"?

I changed it 'cause I didn't want to stand out as much. The red just stood out a little *too* much. I like the purple more anyways.

Some lady stared at me today like I was some freak! I don't know if she was staring at my hair. I don't think I'm that weird for having purple hair!

Do you think I'm weird? Would you stare? When I see someone with a "strange" appearance, I don't automatically assume things of them. Do other people do this? I just want fun hair, I'm not a punk of anything (and I don't think there's anything wrong with being a "punk").

No I would not stare, I might if I liked it, but then I'd tell you why.
It's not weird, it's self expression. People can be weird about that though, and I just don't get it at all. Do they forget that many many criminals wear three piece suits? It seems like such a simple connection to me.
When my Dad gave me a hard time about it, and criticized others, I mentioned to him the Karla Homolka dressed exactly the way he thinks women *should* dress..

I'm a lot older than you and a lot more traditional so I have to confess that I too would probably stare. Fondly, Phillipa

I come from and live a pretty "traditional" life myself. Right now I live with my parents. No one in our extended family has ever had a divorce. I've also never been a "trouble-maker" (except for when I got a little suicidal I guess and freaked people out). I've always done well in school (except now of course :-( ). I also don't dress provocatively or anything...it is just my hair I like to have a little fun with. I know it will grow back or I could dye it back to black anytime.

I sometimes envy old people with very white hair. I think to myself, "Wow, I can get a *very* bright green on that hair!". When I'm old and grey, that's what I'll do. :-) It takes a LOT of bleaching to make my black hair light enough for the bright colours to take.

Deneb, Highlights keep my grey from showing. I guess it's about the same thing. Don't want white hair. If it does get white then I'll do it neon green! Fondly, Phillipa

Yippee! Green hair. Green is a favourite colour. I love the green of green jello and emeralds. I don't know why I love it soooo much...it must do something to my brain.

You can sent me a picture when you get green hair Phillipa! You will be so cool. :-)

Hi Deneb,

If you want to blend in with the crowd, purple hair streaks and all, move to New York City. No one will take a second glance. Purple streaked hair, nose rings, tatoos, you name it, New Yorkers have seen it all -- every day on the the subway. I think the health care is better here, too (i.e., better than in Canada). The only problem is, I don't know of any astronomers in Manhattan, but I'll bet you could find some.

i've had blood red hair, blue hair, green hair, pink hair, and purple hair.

some people stare, some don't. but i just ignore it. not everyone understands everything, so there's no point in getting worked up over it. they could've been staring at you for something else entirely. i thought i was getting stared at for my nosering once, but it turned out it was my eyes (theyre different colors). you just never know.

but doing stuff like that invites people to stare, really, since it's not the "norm" so you have to somewhat expect it to happen.

Downtown Ottawa has some interesting people as well!

Hmmm...it might be a bit of a hassle to travel for hours just to escape the city lights.

I heard an interesting story...not sure if it is true or not and not sure where this occurred...

I heard that when there are city-wide blackouts, there are always people calling emergency services because they are afraid of what they see in the sky...a strange white patch stretching across the sky.

I think it's sad when people have never even seen the Milky Way because of city lights.

I want to try blue hair and green hair next. :-)

I wish I could colour all of my hair, but that would take a lot of bleaching and a lot of haircolour...expensive and very damaging.

> some people stare, some don't. but i just ignore it.

Even I stare sometimes, most of the time I'm admiring their look.

>...not everyone understands everything, so there's no point in getting worked up over it.

I'm not worked up about it or anything...it is just a bit awkward for me because I'm actually a very shy and quiet person. I don't really like drawing too much attention to myself.

>they could've been staring at you for something else entirely. i thought i was getting stared at for my nosering once, but it turned out it was my eyes (theyre different colors).

That is sooo cool! What colours are they?

I never see the Milky Way unless I travel a bit. It's pretty incredible when I see it though!
