I think he's doing us a favor by coming off as such an idiot. He's discrediting himself, Scientology, and the anti-psychiatry viewpoint.

I think it is true. As far as I can tell, scientologists have a particular perspective on health, including mental health.

I happen to disagee with their outlook; I haven't seen much indication of any scientific evidence for their views and techniques. A google search will give you a fuller explanation of what they believe, and what non-scientologists think of their techniques!

Those who didn't see the interview can watch it here:

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/8343367/

Just click where it says "Launch". He starts talking about AD's and psychiatry at the 7:43 minute mark.

I can almost bet that none of you will like what Tom Cruise says. ;-)

I'm with partlycloudy - he gives me the creeps. And, this just solidifies the opinion I already had of him, which wasn't all that good to begin with. I can't even watch his movies because he annoys me too much. Anyway, it is not the first time he has spoken out about psychiatry and meds. He criticized Brooke Shields for using an AD to treat her post-partum depression. According to Tom, she could have treated it just as well with vitamins. I think he said that when he was interviewed by Oprah just a little while ago, during which interview he was literally jumping up and down on the couch.

I used to think he was a role model,

He is lousy, defensive, and really has a inferiority complex. THats why hes so insecure about questions.

I like the Tom back in 1990-1992

He had it together then

Hi, partly cloudy,
Can you explain what your comment about Clearwater, Florida has to do with this? I'm sorry for being so dense. I guess I should know what you're talking about, but I don't. I'm guessing what you mean, but I'm uncertain.
Thanks.

Tom Cruise self-destructs » Emily Elizabeth

In reply to Why I HATE Tom Cruise, posted by Emily Elizabeth on June 24, 2005, at 8:32:12

I have never liked Tom Cruise. I like him even less now. It appears as if he's on a self-destruct mission. I have never seen so much agreement on any topic from such disparate groups. Cruise's behavior is bizarre, inappropriate and insincere. I don't believe he's in love with Katie Holmes, and his stupidity and arrogance regarding psychiatry and psychopharmacology are mind-boggling. From what I understand, the Tom Cruise we've seen the last couple of months is nothing new; it's just that up until recently, he had a good but controversial publicist who managed to keep the real Tom Cruise under wraps. Tom fired that publicist and now has his sister, who is also a $cientologist, acting as his publicist and advisor. It is obvious that firing his previous publicist and hiring his sister was a foolish and devastating career move. Tom's recent behavior proves that he needs drugs and he needs therapy.

Just playing devils advocate here....but maybe he was 'saved' but it....I dont know. I am not really aware of how much he publicly chants about it etc but it could be a useful tool for some?? Why am I even posting this Im not sure...because I dont agree with all that stuff, I am a little anti drugs at times but i take them so?? But I guess I need to be able to see both angles....I dont like that people get 'programed' into such places...and Im ignorant to scientology but what if it helps people? just......what if?? you know? ALthough NOW I am going to read up on it because Ive just posted this :-)

Good plan. I'm refraining from stating my opinion as baldly as I'd like, but a quick check into Ron Hubbard's theories and qualifications should help you make up your mind...

I think Scientologists actually believe that evil aliens (they call them "Thetans") live among us. They really are a bizarre cult. I loved Brooke Shields' response to Tom's criticism of her use of medication to treat her post-partum depression. She replied that he should stick to saving the world from aliens and let the doctors treat their patients.

I can't stand him anymore either. He really made a huge mistake firing his publicist. He's going to end up doing himself in with his arrogance and stupidity. He needs managers who can save him from himself. Spielberg and the studio behind his latest move are said to be very concerned about his behavior lately. They're afraid it's going to hurt the box office draw for their new movie "War of the Worlds" coming out soon. We can only hope....

I enjoyed this evaluation of scientology's understanding of thetans. I was particularly interested to note the author's conclusion:

I just read the whole interview. How obnoxious. Matt did a good job except for a couple of times where he placated Cruise by telling him how knowledgable he is on the subject. How knoweldgable my *ss! He doesn't even know the difference between psychotropic medications in general and antipsychotics. He uses the latter term to mean all psychotropic medications. He's a moron and his attitute that he's the only one who knows anything is insufferable. I'll never pay to go to one of his movies ever again. I hope that the more he shoots off his big mouth, the greater the backlash against him.

why do you say that, jyl?

Your thoughts ARE valid. I always like reading what you contribute. It's usually pithy and thought-provoking...or funny when that's the tone of the thread.... :-)

I hope everyone's thoughts and opinions here are valid.

If you think someone isn't being civil and you want to bring that to their attention, well, go ahead.

Differing points of view are extremely important here - to me at least. Makes for good discussions and learning experiences, most times, I think.

Are you okay?

My concern is that someone who never finished high school, and who also has dyslexia is speaking about his reviewing the research and forming his opinions, and then sharing them with the world as facts.

I certainly don't believe that you must finish high school and be free from a learning disability in order to be a critical reader of scientific material, but, um, there are lots of folks who seem more skilled in this ability to discern the meaning of experimental results than I would assume Tom Cruise is.

Decent actor, big movie star, certainly. Research expert? Hardly.
