Queens Birthday

Posted by alexandra_k on June 5, 2005, at 15:29:57

Today is a public holiday :-)
We celebrate the Queens birthday.
Or at least... We have a day off.
Not that it is her birthday today...
But I guess we could do with a holiday

We do that the third Monday in May. Just an excuse to kick off the summer.

I think her real birthday is in September, or something, isn't it?

Next holiday for us is July 1, which is our Confederation Day.

Ah, so we just beat you again ;-)

I have marking to do, unfortunatly :-(
And what really rips my nightie is that I GET MONDAY OFF ANYWAY. Every week. I do think it is most unfair that everyone else gets monday off too and I get nothing special :-(
I was tempted to take tomorrow off too...

Sorry, bank holidays are what we call the public holidays..

We get;

New Year's Day
Good Friday
Easter Monday
Early May Bank Holiday (first monday in May)
Spring Bank Holiday (last monday in May)
Summer Bank Holiday (last monday in August)
Christmas Day
Boxing Day

And a civil servant is a government worker.. so, tax people, customs people.. all that kind of thing! They get some extra holidays off each year on top of what the rest of the country gets!

interestingly, we get the least number of holidays in all of Europe and the commonwealth! But compared to the US (dunno about Aus / NZ) we do tend to get a decent amount of holiday from employers!!!

Oh.. and another Queens Birthday thing..

Ah... So Blur were right (in a sense) that there are three 'bank holidays' that are called bank holidays - but the other sorts are also called bank holidays... If you get what I mean.

> New Year's Day
> Good Friday
> Easter Monday

Yup :-)
We get them.

> Early May Bank Holiday (first monday in May)
> Spring Bank Holiday (last monday in May)
> Summer Bank Holiday (last monday in August)

We don't get them. We get...
-Waitangi day (we celebrate the signing of the treaty between maori and european settlers)
-Regional anniversary (Auckland anniversary where I'm at)
Queens Birthday...
Um... I can't think of anymore. But there just might be...
Labor day. Thats ringing a bell...

> Christmas Day
> Boxing Day

Yup. We get them too.

> And a civil servant is a government worker.. so, tax people, customs people.. all that kind of thing!

Ah. I had heard the term, but didn't get what it meant. Thanks for that.

>They get some extra holidays off each year on top of what the rest of the country gets!

:-(

But compared to the US (dunno about Aus / NZ) we do tend to get a decent amount of holiday from employers!!!

Aus / NZ are part of the commonwealth.

Thats how come we celebrate the Queens birthday.
Did you mean UK??

I meant the paid vacation time that employers give you..

Like, in my job, I get 27 days a year to take off when I want.. (well, 22 at moment, but its going up.. woo hoo!)
