Feelin' 'bout as faded as my jeans :-(

Posted by TamaraJ on June 1, 2005, at 14:28:52

Just a tad bummed today. My boss told me that he is retiring. We've worked together for a number of years, and he is a great boss - fair, even-tempered, decent and he enjoys a good joke (even tells a few) - one of the good ones. And, those types are few and far between where I work. Drag, drag, drag. The good ones should not be allowed to retire. Or, they should consent to being cloned so that there is an endless supply of good ones. I'm glad for him, though, that he will now be able to take it easy. No more 12 hour days, no more working on weekends, no more getting late night calls or calls when on holidays. Lucky him!

Man, what a bummer. I know the feeling.

I had a great! boss for the longest time. Never told me *how* to do my job, trusted me to know priorities, but available for questions. Plus he was so enthusiastic about our work that it was catching - I never minded working late or on weekends.

When our company was bought we all ended up wrapped in paperwork and such. It took longer to do the paperwork for a lot of projects than it did to just do the project. He had it even worse, being in management - and of course there were the layoffs that weren't pleasant.

About three years ago he got so fed up that he quit. I'm still in mourning.

But I'm trying to focus on how lucky I was to have him to learn from - and lean on.

i am so jealous and happy for you that you both had great bosses. I have had numerous hideous bosses and one great boss in 20 years. It is so rare that you just have to be grateful you had him for as long as you did.

Hey, is that a Janis Joplin lyric? Bobby McGee?
That's too bad about your boss. There doesn't seem to be enough of the good ones. I wish him a happy retirement though. I hope it won't make your job harder though.

Yes, my boss is like that - trusts his managers; doesn't make decisions unilaterally; is inclusive; provides good and timely briefings; has an open-door policy; and is generous with positive feedback. I know what you mean, with a good boss like that, working overtime isn't a drag really.

I will try to take your approach, which sounds like a good one - appreciate the fact that I had a chance to learn and grow professionally from a good boss. The nice thing is that we have become friends over the years, and I know we will get together for lunch occassionally after he retires. So, he can be like a mentor :-)

Thanks AuntieMel.

Oh, Ana, I am sorry you have had a number of rotten bosses :-( That really stinks. Makes it hard to get up and go to work each day. I have been pretty fortunate to have had good bosses for most of my career. I think there was one real *sshole, but he didn't last long. And there was one other boss who was really good to me, but treated many of the others like cr*p. Made for a toxic environment, and I only stayed there for about 1 year. I can handle long hours, unreasonable deadlines/demands and a fast pace, but interpersonal tension, even if it is not directed at me, puts me on edge more than anything else.

Yeah, words from Me & Bobby McGee (I am a thief :-))

I am not sure if it will make my job harder. I guess it will depend on who is going to replace him. I forgot to ask him today if that decision has been made. Oh well, I am sure everything will be ok. It's just sad for the group. There will be a lot of unhappy people, not just in our section, but in other sections and departments. He has a very, very good reputation - extremely well-respected.

He sounds hard to replace but my fingers are crossed that you get another good boss.
