Social Phobia

Posted by Blondin on January 14, 2005, at 14:01:42

I have used Paxil, Wellbutrin and now I am starting Effexor XR 37.5 MG. I am taking this because I have a form of social phobia.

Wellbutrin helped me to overcome being shy when meeting people but I still had and have a very hard time retaining relationships/friendships. This has been so hard for me because I'm in school where I'm surrounded by people and on occasions I have to speak out in class or give presentations.

I can't do these things. I feel sick to the point where it hurts. I feel paralyzed, dizzy, and have trouble breathing. Another part is my sleeping pattern; weeks in advance I cannot sleep if I am supposed to give a presentation (I`ll take 5 Nytols to get some sleep).

All of my symptoms are uncontrollable. I have even dropped several courses because I found out that I would have to do a lot of presentations. I have received poor marks because I don't participate in class or raise my hand. When called upon I nearly choke.

It's ruining my life. It has to stop. I don't know what to do.I'm taking Effexor and I hope it will help but I know it alone will not help me.

Is there any recommendations as to what I should do? Or if there might be something better?

Have you tried cognitive behavior therapy? I believe it (when properly done) has a pretty good success rate with social phobia.

And welcome to Babble :)
