Toph that isn't very funny, but most people, the innocent and ignorant (this word is meant in the TRUE sense of ignorant, NOT an insult IN ANY WAY) ones, like you, don't know that. My work with the police tells me that, unfortunately. Let's not go there, to that subject, again. There's lots of precious people on these boards who're hurting from exactly the stuff I spent so many years of my life being exposed to second-hand, through their sad, sad words. Believe me to everyone out there who's had abuse, most police officers who are working child abuse cases are VERY empathetic and caring, WONDERFUL people.
I don't know why I went there, Toph, and picked up on that like this, but I did. You sound sweet and caring and safe. There.

I apologize, I was just trying to clarify my post, but also be clever about it which I was not. Like you, I am no stranger to SA. For 6 ears I was a child protection worker in two states before my current position so I've seen the kind of emotional devastation you are referring to. I don't mind being told not to be flippant about things. I just wish it wasn't so frequent. I'm afraid I'm getting a bad reputation as a sophomoric lout. Anyway, I apologize to you and anyone else I was insensitive to. Sorry.

I don't mean ceiling-gazing, either. Having said that police workers are on the whole very sensitive and caring, their jokes do leave something to be desired, but it's NEVER about child abuse or victimization, it's usual about sex, in general.
SO, what're you working at right now, and why only two years as a child protection worker?

6 years was plenty. I could talk for hours about child protection and how difficult it is and how messed up the system is and how aweful it is for the children victimized by it. When a position opened 12 years ago in adult protective services I jumped at it not knowing whether I could work with vulnerable adults. Obviously, given that I am knocking on doors 12 years later, it turned out to be a good fit for me. I think I have learned a lot from the elderly and physically disabled adults that I work with. What I especally like is how, unlike child protection which is tertiary intervention, in APS we get in there and prevent placement most of the time, doing guardianships and protective placements only as a last resort. Also, ethical issues of client self-determination and least restrictive intervention are universally applied as fundamental rights. Probably more than you wanted to know, though.
