I would welcome China with open arms as the next superpower. Let another country be the world's whipping post for awhile.

Sorry, I usually don't get involved with political stuff around here. A moment of weakness.

Yup, yup, yup he's the one I'd vote for (assuming I was eligible). It is a shame he looks so awkward round the minorities (I hate to even say that but it was big on our news last night).

Now, nobodies even probably heard much of NZ politics but VOTE GREEN I say

DECRIMINALISE MARAJUANA
SAVE THE WHALES
A VOTE LEFT OF NATIONAL
SUPPORTS WELFARE FOR ALL YAY!

But then I'd rather Bush was scapegoat... (nm)

As a person in 'the rest of the world'..

There are other sources of oil; we want someone we can trust to act thoughtfully and knowledgably; and can recognise complexity (its not good people and bad people). And hopefully not in the pocket of powerful industries.

That may be too much to expect from either of them; I dont know. But I would want it to be clear that it isnt a straightforward division between 'us' and 'them' with US and the rest of us (which includes a vast range of different cultures).

We all live on the same planet, for better or worse, and your president is the most powerful man in the world. Will there be a black and/or female president one day? In the UK, we did have a woman in Maggie Thatcher, but what a disappointment!

Sorry- I'm not aiming to be partisan/policital (tho I am very much hoping for a particular result), but to explain how things can be from the 'other side'.

>But I would want it to be clear that it isnt a straightforward division between 'us' and 'them' with US and the rest of us (which includes a vast range of different cultures).

Fair enough, your point is well taken. I have to say that I am actually incredibly ill informed about politics, as I rarely watch the news or read the paper. I get most of my info from making controversial statements and seeing what reasons people have for dissgreeing with me. Thats how I make up my mind what to think, basically.

> There are other sources of oil

Oh, ok. I am not sure on the facts here. My office mate tells me that while it is only a small amount of the percentage of US oil it is still a lot of oil when you have to figure out alternative sources for it.

>we want someone we can trust to act thoughtfully and knowledgably; and can recognise complexity (its not good people and bad people). And hopefully not in the pocket of powerful industries.

The trouble is figuring out what the 'thoughtful' and 'knowledgable' thing to do is. It is easy to pick words - I mean who doesn't believe that terrorists should stoppit. But when it comes to seeing whether the label 'terrorist' applies to particular people or not then the situation gets a lot trickier. I mean the innocent citizens of Iraq probably consider the US military to be 'terrorists' - imagine how much terror they have caused, how many innocents have died. But we prefer to call that 'collateral damage'.

> That may be too much to expect from either of them; I dont know.

Well, yes there is always that.

> We all live on the same planet, for better or worse, and your president is the most powerful man in the world. Will there be a black and/or female president one day? In the UK, we did have a woman in Maggie Thatcher, but what a disappointment!

Yeah, we have a female prime minister now, and the last prime minister was also female (though they were with opposing parties). I don't know if we can say anything useful about how 'female rule' is better than or worse than, people are people at the end of the day, and some make good decisions and some make bad and some are male and some are female and some are black and some are yellow etc etc.

> Sorry- I'm not aiming to be partisan/policital (tho I am very much hoping for a particular result), but to explain how things can be from the 'other side'.

I read your opinion with much interest :-)

I see the big picture. 9/11 happened while Bush is president & the world is becoming increasingly divided since Iraq happened. Meanwhile, Dick Cheney's friends are getting rich by getting most of the contract work in Iraq.

Let's try an experiment, everyone: be positive about your candidate instead of negative about the other one. :-)

That would remove fear from politics & where would be the fun in that? :)

How about this: since the last democrat president left office you have had 9/11, a war in Afghanistan, a war in Iraq, big set backs in realtionships between the western world & Iran. I am pretty POSITIVE that if a democrat doesn't get in, things are only going to get worse.

Cheers,
Paul.

You are exactly right Scott.

Dubya holds the world record for largest ever deficit & aims to make it even bigger. Some one should pull him aside & tell him that having a deficit is a bad thing.....

9/11 didn't happen overnight. It was in the planning stage long before Bush was president. Our great country declined morally while Clinton was pres. You folks just don't get it.

Let's play nice.

I disagree with you. I don't feel that the country somehow declined morally during the 1990s, and if it did, it certainly wasn't the result of the Clinton presidency. Of course, we may have different definitions of morals, but I consider Clinton to be one of the most moral of people to ever hold the office. It is unfortunate that his sexual escapade at the end of his term is to tarnish so much his legacy.
