Question for Lou Pilder

Posted by partlycloudy on September 24, 2004, at 10:07:11

Hi, Lou. I have a question and I hope you don't find it too personal, but I am a curious creature, like my Psycho kitty. Swat my paws away if I offend, as that is not my purpose.
My question is - you seem to be posting many requests for clarification on the Admin board. I am curious as to what your purpose is in dissecting others' posts with which you may not concurr.
I personally have a difficult time following bits and pieces of a post, and prefer to look at a post in its entirety in order to examine its context.
Thanks for your time, Lou.

partlycloudy,
You wrote in relation to my requests for clarification on the admin. board, [....I am curious as to what your purpose is...].
One reason for a request for clarification is to have a better understanding of what is written. This request also gives the poster that is being requested to clarify, an opportunity to express themselves more about the request in question, which could produce more light on a subject in discussion and give the one requesting the clarification an opportunity to respond accordingly. I feel honored when someone asks me to clarify something that I wrote, for it shows me that at least someone read the post and there is interest in it enough to request for me to clarify something in the post.
Lou

Sorry, Lou - I do understand that your requests for clarification are to gain a complete understanding of a post. What I SHOULD have said is that I get rather confused in trying to follow the various requests for clarification that you've posted on the Admin Board, because they appear to be examining a post line by line or even word by word. For someone like me, who has a rather roundabout way of expressing myself, it is confusing to see parts of posts being quoted and clarification requested about that particular bit of the post, rather than the post in its entirety. Kind of like when you eat a trifle, to get the complete experience of the dessert, your spoon should contain a bit of each layer. Am I making myself clearererer???

partlycloudy,

Sometimes the lines upon lines are interconnected and so is it with the words at times, but do you have a particular post in question that we can examine together?

No, thank you, Lou. I haven't seen any posts that I feel require clarification for me.

Perhaps I just interpret what I see on the boards here in the same spirit with which I post: spontaneously, often with instinctive and insupportable opinions; and - given that I am a highly sensitive and emotional creature these days - I try to take what I read with several grains of salt, because perhaps the poster, like myself, is having One Of Those Days.

take good care,

My use of language is a kind of groping in the dark. I tend to be very imprecise and use a lot of metaphors or figures of speech.

When I'm pressed for clarification I feel invalidated and even threatened. And rather than opening up the lines of communication, it shuts them down.

Perhaps that's just me or a borderline thing.

I don't consider metaphors or figures of speech to be an inferior or 'imprecise' mode of communication. There have been attempts to 'purify' language of these elements. However, the very idea of a 'cleaner' or 'purified' language is itself metaphorical, so these projects are themselves rhetorical displays, if you see what I mean.

If someone says, "I don't understand what you mean by x," yes, that is often a threatening response, or at the very least a claim that the post is not consonant with what the replier him- or herself believes.

I don't think so.

lou..
"i feel" it may offend
to have words and thoughts "challenged",
to re-state a point ...;
takes away from the brief valid point.
every post
every thought
are wonderful pieces of art
no one should feel preasured
to tell the masses why we paint with only a blue hue..

I'm an artist. I have never felt pressured when someone asked a question about my work. Although at some point I may not answer but say what does it mean to you that I would paint in blue? What do you see? Far from taking away from the point I made I often see things in a different way and learn from them

Why would I show my art and then have contempt for someone who wanted to talk to me?

I never think in terms of the "masses". That helps I think.

JyL's post came across to me as her "being pressured" not simply "feeling" pressured by being asked a question once.

I too would feel I was being pressured If I were repeatedly asked to explain something.

> Why would I show my art and then have contempt for someone who wanted to talk to me?

Again I don't think it's talking or friendly curiousity that is the concern. It's repeated requests for an explanation.

I apologize if I read you wrong JYL

"contempt"?
i thought the word i used was "challenged"
understand i was talking about my feelings.
i can not tell you how to be an artist...
you can not tell me how i should view myself..
