narcissist personality disorder?

Posted by woolav on August 4, 2004, at 10:37:53

Hi, I was wondering if anyone else knows someone who has NPD. My stepfather has it and it is unbelievable how he can ruin lives and not even know it. (maybe he does). I have tried to get my mom to leave him, but he has her messed up mentally now and plus, he has money. But I dont think i can take it anymore. Anyone with knowledge of this illness please respond.
Thanks
S

My aunt recently divorced her husband who was thought to have NPD. He was always getting drunk and he had an alcohol problem. I'd witnessed him being mean to his kids and he was mean to my dad for being overweight. In the process of their divorce he still lived with my aunt and she finally had to change the locks one day and go to a hotel with her kids because he wanted her money (and thats why he wouldn't leave). I don't know for sure if thats what he has, thats just what her therapist told her.

Sorry if my post wasn't much help to you. All I know is that someone suggested that he had it. But I really don't know much about it.

What are the earmarks of NPD? I have been labeled by my husband and my mother as a narcissist. What does this mean? They say I am a narcissist because I am always talking about myself and my own problems and that I want all the attention. (This is their point of view about me) I never know if it's true and if it is, how bad is it? I don't want or mean to be selfish self-centered or uncaring yet I have this label attached. Is narcissism treatable?

I doubt u really have NPD. Because if so, you wouldnt even be on sites like this. Because "you" wouldnt have any problems..Here's one definition of NPD:

A pervasive pattern of grandiosity (in fantasy or behavior), need for admiration, and lack of empathy, beginning by early adulthood and present in a variety of contexts, as indicated by five (or more) of the following:

has a grandiose sense of self-importance (e.g., exaggerates achievements and talents, expects to be recognized as superior without commensurate achievements)
preoccupied with fantasies of unlimited success, power, brilliance, beauty, or ideal love
believes that he or she is "special" and unique and can only be understood by, or should associate with, other special or high-status people (or institutions)
requires excessive admiration
has a sense of entitlement, i.e., unreasonable expectations of especially favorable treatment or automatic compliance with his or her expectations
is interpersonally exploitative, i.e., takes advantage of others to achieve his or her own ends
lacks empathy: is unwilling to recognize or identify with the feelings and needs of others
is often envious of others or believes that others are envious of him or her
shows arrogant, haughty behaviors or attitudes

mmmm...no. I guess that's not me then. I was raised by a bipolar/schizophrenic mother who gave me all kinds of labels and continues to label me. Even as an adult, she finds ways to call me and harrass me on my job while I am working to tell me that I am self-centered and only care about meeting my own needs. My husband says I am needy and attention-seeking. Labels. Labels. Well, it's good to know that at least I'm not a narcissist. Thanks.
