My baby is 21

Posted by fallsfall on June 2, 2004, at 9:41:09

My oldest daughter turns 21 today. I am so proud of her, she has done such a good job growing up. But she is in Mexico, and that feels awfully far away on such an important day. Phones are a real problem, so I can't even call her. So I'm sending her email cards, and telling everyone who we both know in hopes that they will send her cards or email.

Anyone know any great free eCard sites?

congrats, Mom! I'm sorry she is away on this special day. I usually use hallmark.com for free cards, but the selection is a bit limited. I think I sent the same anniversary card to my inlaws two years in a row. D'oh!

Take care,
gg

You may want to try one of these sites. They offer some free cards but you'll have to search through them.

falls!!!!! wonderful job raising a beautiful daughter to the 'old' age of 21! i always go to blue mountain, or run a search on google when i'm looking for a card. will you tell her i said happy birthday? and also that she has a wonderful mother? and not to drink the water in mexico. and can i come and visit her? i do feel a special connection to her, maybe because i'm so very fond of her lovely mother? (*falls, just in case you didn't catch that one, that's me hitting on you in a sly way dear. i know it's sometimes hard for you to pick up on that.... :)

falls,

Sorry I'm late here. I hope your daughter had a wonderful birthday and I hope you enjoyed the milestone, as well. I'm not sure though, I think something like this might be a little bittersweet (is that the right word?) My son will turn 2 in eight days and I find myself vacillating between being so proud and happy and wanting to cry because my little boy is growing up so fast. Sounds like you're in the proud and happy category! And remember, she did such a good job growing up because she had such a fantastic mother raising her :).

So, the important question is did you have ice cream to celebrate?

I use greeting-cards.com.

Take care,
Laurie

I am happy and proud. But I do miss her - she is wonderful company.

I didn't have ice cream, but I bought some yellow cupcakes (she likes yellow cake - in almost everything else her tastes are like mine, so I don't know how she got so screwed up in the "what kind of cake to like" category), and brought them in to the library to share (I didn't want to eat them all myself - I don't particularly like yellow cake). Of course, no one wanted any (because they weren't chocolate, duh). I sent them into school with my younger daughter the next day.

They never, ever, completely stop needing you. But how much they need, and what they need help with changes over time. I think that as your son becomes more independent, that you will be proud of his achievements (going to preschool, being happy about staying at a friend's house, getting dressed by himself, making his first PB&J). The same is true when they are older - you miss them, but you are so proud of how wonderfully they are growing up.

[and, boy, am I glad *I* don't still have a 2 year old... I can take my kids into a store and they don't wander off and get lost. They don't (usually) scream and throw temper tantrums in public - though my 16 year old is doing this more now... They can call whoever or whatever themselves and ask for things (like "What time do you close" or "Can I sign up for..." etc.) They can choose things themselves (i.e. clothes, food, books, what to do) so I don't have to make ALL of the decisions. I don't know that I would have the patience needed for a 2 year old right now...]
