I survived!

Posted by DaisyM on May 13, 2004, at 20:49:06

As many of you know, I have been stirred up for a month about going away on a business retreat with my staff. I *knew* it would be hard, emotinally, just because I've had a number of challenges in my life lately. Last week I had a complete melt down at the end of a session, actually told him I *couldn't* leave because I couldn't face it.

Anyway, I went, it was pretty OK and I only had one meltdown. I managed to do this in private and get myself back together and continued to lead the activities. On Tuesday, 4 of us spent 3 hours learning "friendly" horseback riding. It was so great! We spent the first hour getting to know the horses, playing corral games, etc. I, of course, was given the stallion because *I'm* the boss. LOL. Right. The guide says, "just turn around and stop and he'll stop behind you. You have to show him who is in charge." Ummmm....my horse just walked right by me! I had to use the stool to get in the saddle, I"m so short! And at first, he would only go backwards! (Yes, they all laughed at me.) But finally we hit the trails and it was amazing. Thanks Racer, for all the tips. I wasn't sore the next day!!

I'm so proud of myself for trying something new, even if I felt foolish. :)

That's a dominance thing. It means that he was checking out if you'd let him get away with it -- like a teenager testing limits. The right answer is to spin at him and glare at him. Remember, mares are always in charge, so he's hardwired to listen to you -- after he's checked out whether you mean it.

That's much better for their backs, which are pretty fragile overall. If you can avoid getting on from the ground, do it.

I'm glad for any help I could offer. And I'm glad you had a successful retreat.

Sorry, I'm too far gone right now to say more, but I'm very glad this worked out so well for you.
