Feeling sick about sister who was in an accident

Posted by tinydancer on May 2, 2004, at 11:50:13

My sister and I are very, very close. Even though we live in different countries, she's my right arm and I love her so much. We had a hard time in our childhood but since we recovered from that our relationship has been stronger than ever and we are best friends.

Today she told me she had been in a terrible car accident. Head on collision, both cars totalled. It was a Ford Explorer that came at them and hit my sister and her best friend. The other car was ticketed for reckless driving-all parties escaped with no more than cuts. My sister said she thought she was going to die. I almost lost my brother in a car accident several years ago when he was sideswiped by a Ford pickup going about 60 mph driving his tiny Honda Civic. This just makes me so ill. Car accidents are so terrifying. I had a near miss myself, as many of us do, and I know what a nightmare it can be. Lives can be destroyed so quickly by cars, which are a weapon if not used by people who are sober and know what they are doing.
My poor sister has 7 exams to go this week (she is a college student) and I feel terrible for her. This was not good timing. I hate being so far away from her!

I think I read a statistic that said there are 9 million! major car accidents/year in the U.S. I've totalled several cars myself- one where no one felt I would make it. It must be very triggering for you to hear about your sister's accident (especially coming after your own and brother's), but she is VERY fortunate not to have been seriously hurt. did her air bags deploy? how is she emotionally?- sometimes people need counselling so they don't develop PTSD. Any professor should provide her an extension for her exams after such an incident, and sometimes people have a delayed physical and emotional response weeks later. If she isn't feeling up to taking her exams, make sure she asks for an extension. I hope you feel better soon- judy

I'm so glad she was unhurt, but wow, that would be upsetting. I'm close to my sister, too. She lives about 850 miles away, so if anything happened to her, I'd feel really helpless.

Take care of yourself, and I hope you and yours stay well.

i'm far from my sister as well. and it hurts me too. perhaps keeping in touch via phone and email may help ease your mind a bit? it helps me.

i am glad to see you here though dear. ((((tiny))) take care dear. and she'll get something worked out with her profs. if she's as smart as you are, she'll get that taken care of darling. and i'm certain the brains run in your family. i'm sorry about your news. it's terrible to receive news like that when you are far from them.

I'm so glad she had no serious injuries. But I understand that particularly given her history it must have been traumatic. I'll keep both of you in my thoughts.

If she really feels like it will affect her exams, she should talk to her professors. I remember I rather uncharacteristically flunked a test once. My teacher (high school) called me to her desk to talk to me about it, and I let her know that our family dog had died that morning (she really had). And that while I thought I felt ok, obviously I hadn't been. She dropped the test from my total grade, bless her.

She didn't mention anything about the air bags. I know that all the windows were smashed and blown into the car and they both were cut, which is even scarier because my sister has a serious bleeding disorder.
The problem is my sister is a warrior-she is superwoman and wants to do it all and beat it all, so according to her she is just getting on with life. I have told her many times that going to a counselor could be a good thing for her. She is taking Zoloft in a small dose for depression and anxiety, and I think its important to deal with the feelings there too. She is extraordinarily sensitive so I know that the feelings from this accident are there somewhere being buried deep under so she can cope with the exams. She would never cave in to her feelings, instead she just tries all the harder to rise above them. We all have our coping methods, I guess. I am staying in close touch with her as is my mom so I think she will be okay. Thanks for your post.

It is really upsetting. I just get sick thinking that I could have lost her, that easily, and never seen her again. And I feel so much pain being so far away from her.
Luckily she is coming this summer and I am looking forward to that a lot. Thanks for your thoughts!

Yes, being far away is the dumps. It really sucks. We are doing our best to keep in touch via email and stuff-she only has a cell phone and no house phone so I can't even talk to her which kills me. But it helps a lot to keep in contact on the chat programs or whatever, just to know she is OK.
Yeah, I've not been around as much as usual on PB, sometimes I just am too tired to contribute, but I'm doing a bit better in terms of everyday functioning, which is a huge relief. Glad I'm going to my T today. Thanks for all the kind words girly, hugs to you too!

Thanks Fallen you are the best!

She seems to be doing okay. It just shakes me up so much. Especially due to the fact it triggers so much about my brother's horrible accident. He is still suffering post trauma from that which also resulted in a totalled car. I just feel like I hate cars today!

Lots of HUGS to you FALLEN!!!!!!!!!!

Hi Dinah!

See, I wish she would do this, but I know her and how she thinks-she has so much on her mind and in her heart, that she's afraid that giving in to it, in the smallest bit will open the floodgates and she will drown. I wish she would go to a counselor (I wish my Mom would at least try to make her!)

Thanks for your thoughts. I am glad I have my T appt today, so I can get some of this pain which is strangling me OUT!
