Creative outlet for my friends here?

Posted by Angielala on February 5, 2004, at 11:08:41

**Sorry to post this twice, but I just realized that it might be better as a new post**

On a side note- without being scientific at all, another way to really help yourself in the low times is to surround yourself with support. I have great friends and all, but they can only be my support up until the time they stop understanding- when they start saying, "Why would you ever want to end your life? That's silly"

My support is right here on this board. I have learned so much about myself by listening to otheres here. People here only want to listen and be listened too- and everyone does what they can to get you out of your blues with positive feedback, great ideas, and the comfort knowing that you are DEFINITELY not alone in your battle. Everyone is different, but we are all empathetic- we all understand our differences and pains. This really is a wonderful place. I wish pdocs would visit this site ans see the community that everyone has built here to provide such a strong and motivated support group. We have Dr. Bob to thank for allowing us to share so openly.

I'm really considering reaching out to a lot of you to help start a website of our own- not to rival this one at all, but more for the support we find here- peopel here could post profiles and such on a website I built- you can put anything you want down about yourselves, books you love, movies, pictures of those cute doggies! Some place were we can build strong relationships and then converse here. would anyone here be interested in that? If you are, I'm willing to design and maintain it. I would jsut need all of you wonderful people to help give me stuff for the site. it would basically be a "Get to know who you are talking to once you have become a member of the Dr. Bob Social support group" type thing. It would free up Dr. Bob's resources so that we can post easily and quickly here. I'd keep the database for all the profiles and pictures and ANY randomness you'd like. that way there is no overload on Dr. Bob for all of this. I would actually give each of you a whole page if you'd really like to get involved. You could pick a topic to rant on- you could have a pic gallery of your own that you could share with anyone you want. You could choose to have a news article like The Onion does, but maybe it can be all about mental illness. Funny stories, angry rants, your own research.... whatever your little hearts desire- I'd be willing to do it, I would just need enough people that would want to do it to start it- and then I think it would really catch on. It would help us all get to know each other a little better and strengthen our bonds already.

It's somethign I have been thinking about a lot. I think it would be a good project for all of us, and there would be no pressure at all. We all have our times when we just can't do things, and of course that would always be forgiven. So I'm basically saying I need some help, but I will never hound anyone or make anyone feel uncomfortable. I won't monitor cuss words and such, and will make a disclaimer that cuss words are allowed, since many times cuss words need to be spurted out to get our aggressions out. However, if anyone were to be hounding anyone else, I'll step in.

Since we are all pretty much far apart from each other, I think this would be a nice way to virtually tie us closer together.

Anyone dig the idea? Any questions/comments? Anyone think I'm absolutely crazy? :)

What do you think Dr. Bob, having a supplemental website to yours- taking on some of the heavy server-side things like a database for profiles and letting them write news articles (faux or non)- basically a more informal way to let your people communicate once they feel comfortable enough to show off a little. I would OF COURSE, have your link all over the place- because what I ultimately do is attract more people in need to this site- it's so helpful in SO many different, healthy ways- I want to spread the word, and I think I have some tricks up my sleeves to pull it off. I have been designing websites since I was in 8th grade- I taught myself HTML, XML, DHTML, Javascript, Flash, you name it. I think giving us all a creative outlet to say something things that might be offensive (like when people have to rant) or having many pictures or artwork of people. I know there are a lot of good writers on here too. I find that so many people here have unfilling jobs, mostly because their creative sides are never touched. I'd like to give all of these people I have grown to love an outlet like that.

I need a project like this, to tie my web skills and love of helping people through hard times...

Anyone? Thoughts? I'm going to stop with the babble now :)

Hi Angielala,
are you in web design? or is it a hobby? i think it sounds like a good idea only i am paranoid as it is posting here. I feel like any little bit of detail might give me away LOL! I am so important and all, i have to keep my confidentiality :) seriously though, id think about it. but i really am hesitant posting. I think it was so brave of all those who posted pictures. I would love to but i fear someone might see me. would it be something like this site? when you mentioned profiles it kind of threw me.

The profiles would only be for those who would like to post them- you would never have to post anythign you don't want to. The site would be more for all of you. Each of you can choose something different to do, or some of you can combined. Writing jokes, stories, artwork... maybe a pet gallery :) Basically I want it to be a creative outlet with less restrictions than this one- as far as posting certain things and having the freedom to say "Hey Angielala- can I rant about how I'm feeling right now and have you post it as a story?" or "Can I have a page solely dedicated to my dogs?" anything- random stuff- it would just be a different way of sharing- but no one would ever have to reveal themselves in anyway if they don't want to. :) I want everyone to feel comfortable and I would like people to be able to share with their friends things they wrote, artwork, maybe an advice column... there are just so many talented people here and I feel like I have the perfect way that they can share their talents online if they'd like. It would be easier than doing everything through Babble open because you won't need to set up and account and have limitations (like how many pictures you can post, etc) it would all be free, of course. I'd like everyone to share at least their talents of writing and making people laugh and maybe making up a sarcatic news story... we have so much material we could have, and it would be helpful to us all :) And Of course I'd have a whole page of good websites to goof off on and stuff like that too. This site is your oyster- I'm willing, you all tell em what you'd like to do!

Awesome. I'm going to start braintstorming. Each one of you has something special... I'm going to go through old posts and see if i can find a special niche for everyone. I think this could be a LOT of fun!

KK/Miss HoneyChurch- could easily write an "Onion"-type article. She's got the humor, the right kind of sarcastic/dark humor and wonderful communication skills that could pull that off with ease. I think anything you'd write and share would be completely perfect to put on the site...

Poet could write about her day to day events. She's has this wonderful way with storytelling- her shopping adventure story is a perfect example :)

Dinah/LynneDa/gabbix2- you give great, down-to-earth advice. You'd be great at being some sort of write in advice columnist. maybe something a little out of the box- perhaps you can pick the problem- maybe you see someone going through something that you know a lot of people do and have some uplifting, great advice to give... it could be a piece of prose of sorts- anything you want.

These are just random ideas- of course EVERYONE gives great advice here, I'm just giving all of you some ideas of what I'm trying to accomplish. If someone like us, ran into a website like this, with all of these people who are "mentally distubred" writing funny, informative articles, showing off art, pets... they would feel so much more comfortable with posting to Dr-bob.org. And for those people with the fear (some like to call it the stigma) for people like us, come onto the website and see just how human and extraordinary we are- maybe in our own small way we can fend off some of that stigma.

pegasus/Medusa/SusanJ- do you know how absolutely wonderful it would be to have an anti-depression fashion site page? Funny- yet surprisingly helpful! I know it may sound silly to some- but you could totally pull it off! It would be like "Sex in the City" but more like, "Prozac in the Mall' :) (I just used Prozac as an off-the-cuff example) Haha- I'll be more than happy to model hahahahaha

gardenergirl- Best Wardrobe Malfunctions- That's hilarious! You could do top ten lists of these kinds of things- but of real events that you collect from this board ... you are so funny- you take oridnary everday things and make them funny. You are like the female Seinfeld ;)

8 Mile/Racer- I think you would be excellent at either writing about what's been on your mind about worldy issues or just simply writing about what's on your mind. You always seem to have a different spin on ideas, and I think it's helpful- it keeps people real, and it allows people to open their minds on issues they may not have been thinking about.

Nikki- I think you'd be a good person to help me find cool websites- as I believe you share that love of them with me :)

Fogmama- I have a feeling you love finding interesting websites too (per your cool images of pharmaceutical molecules)

There are about 100 more people I'd like to join, but of course, there is NO presssure, I'm just throwing out ideas. If you have some ideas of what you'd like to do, let me know, I'll start making a list and coming up with some easy ways that we can collaborate.....

Who are the pet lovers here? I think we should have a pet gallery :) We all seem to love our pets :)

Is anyone interested? Am I just crazy in thinking this would work well?

But then again, consider the source ;-)

It's funny, but I just started thinking yesterday of putting up my own answer to MoveOn.org, and creating sort of the same thing you're suggesting: a place to put up all my Rants and Rantlets, with a way of allowing others a chance to have their own rants included.

Guess it must be something in the water. I think that's a very good idea, and a very nice idea. Having an outlet for some of those things would certainly be helpful to a lot of people, and I guess I'm one of them.

Keep us posted, eh?

I hadn't read this when I posted before. I want to take this opportunity to respond to something you said in this post:

8 Mile/Racer- I think you would be excellent at either writing about what's been on your mind about worldy issues or just simply writing about what's on your mind. You always seem to have a different spin on ideas, and I think it's helpful- it keeps people real, and it allows people to open their minds on issues they may not have been thinking about.

This fits into something I was thinking about, after that thread above about the disease model of depression. Obviously, I'm interested in politics to some extent. [rolls eyes] 8 miles and I disagree about politics. I'm very interested in learning to understand 8 miles' political views, even though I doubt I'll ever agree with those views. Personally, I think two of the biggest problems facing our world today are a lack of critical reasoning and a lack of understanding of opposing views. I don't even care what anyone else thinks about any of this -- I just want to understand the views from another perspective.

Anyway, I was thinking of inviting 8 miles to email me to type politics, in an effort to learn what another person with another perspective really thinks. The babble boards don't strike me as the best possible forum for that effort, but something like what you're suggesting might be a good alternative.

If 8 miles takes you up on your offer, I'd be willing to enter into the fray. We could call it In The Crosshairs...

Also, I've usually got a bug up my bum about something, and whether it's entertaining or not, I've got plenty to say on any of them...

So, I just have one thing to say here, my lovely wife to be.... What exactly to you have to gain from my wit, beauty (oh, what's that have to do with this?), talent, humor and sacrasm? Will you make a profit? And of course, as your bride-to-be, will I see half of this profit?

All kidding aside, I think it sounds like a wonderful idea. But, will there be any type of PBC's or anything like that (no offense Dr. Bob, you know I'm madly in love with you)??? What about dark humor or keeping tabs on fairly offensive material, anything like that? Can people be fairly obscene? Has this already been addressed, I'm jumping in midconversation here... Would you post a pic like Dr. Bob? Would you be nakie?

Dr. Bob runs a tight show here, and I completely understand why he does. So I'm thinking more along the lines that our site would be able to go over the edge, with dark humor and such :) I think one of *my* points is that sometimes WE need to be obscene, make some people uncomfortable... sometimes that's the only way to learn or empathize... but I understand that Dr. Bob is serving a wide audience- so you need wider rules... but this site would be for those who reach this board and are looking to read some off topic things, laugh, have something to do... maybe even share.

No profits... I'll pay for the hosting and domain and all, I have all the software I need... so it's a sacrafice on my end, but I think if we all get together on this, we could have something pretty entertaining :)

I'll definitely post pics- I'll do goofy things like touch my tongue to my nose while nakie :) (jk, no nakie... it'll be rated R, not X)

How much does it cost to host a website?

How about setting up a chat room on somewhere like yahoo or talkcity or msn, wherever, so that we can have "realtime" conversations with each other?
We could call it Babblers Anonymous or Babblicious or Babble Buddies....well you get the drift.

Whaddya think?

Hey Toots :)

It won't cost much- like $30 a month or something.. I may even be able to host it on my pre-hubby's web server at his company.. I'll look into that. Buying the domain is like $30 for a year or something like that. i can certainly set up a realtime chat room! :)

I like Babblicious :)

I sometimes feel like a schoolmarm or someone's boring grandmother. :(

But I just wanted to mention that from what I know of Dr. Bob (and I could be waaaay off here, and if so Sorry Dr. Bob), he wouldn't be really excited about the idea of implied linkage between Psychobabble and a site over which he has no control.

I mean, I'm sure he'd enthusiastically support the idea of you starting a board. And it wouldn't be the first Babble spinoff board. And I'm sure he'd be happy to let you post links to it.

I'm not sure he'd want it implied that there was an affiliation unless he also had control over content.

Yes, I always have enjoyed discussing divergent thought. HOWEVER, I have a strong *need* to be right, so I will try to out-reason or out-logic or out-research my "opponent" until I can find a crack in their philosophy. NO, I do NOT think that sort of banter would go over well here, nor would it be applicable (unless, of course, the discussion WAS a mental-health related issue). I have an OCD component to my illness that somehow drives me to find out about things. HOWEVER, my recently DXd ADHD sometimes makes my thought processes get mixed up. I have been treated for this for about 1 month now, and I HAVE seen some very promising results. My life could not be anymore stressful (nor has it EVER been in my life)than it is right now. I won't go into specifics right now, but my spring is stretched about as far as it can go.
Return to subject:
I would be interested in email communication such as you have proposed. Let me know what you can figure out, and we can go from there.

I've thought about adding profiles here (see PB Administration), if you want, sure, give it a whirl!

Hmm, if you wanted, I guess it might be an option for you just to do it right here... It could be more integrated that way, but OTOH there would need be some constraints, for example, regarding registration information...
