He just bit me!!! :(((

Posted by Dinah on November 15, 2003, at 15:48:47

Harry for the first time in his thirteen years of life just bit me. I had given him his pill and trying to get him into a quiet room to eat his special food and he didn't want to go. When I reached to pick him up, he bit me. Hard enough to mark the skin if not break it.

He's been crabby with the other dogs and I gave him his first dose of a narcotic pain reliever this morning. This really really doesn't bode well, I'm afraid.

I just can't bear to have him die on me.

I'm sure he bit you because he is hurtingright now. What is going on with him? It is always hard to see your dog in pain. I'm so sorry. It is sad to think about losing a pet as well, as they are as much a family member as a child. I know we call our dog our son. Maybe it just hurt him to pick him up? Is that possible? I wish I knew what to say. I will be thinking about you. Karen

This may seem like a bizarre suggestion, but have you condidered giving him liquid deprenyl? Deprenyl capsules are given to older dogs to make them more cheerful and active (it's an MAO inhibitor, acts on dopamine)....they're actually marketed to pet owners by the pharma company that makes them. Liquid Dep is ostensively for people, but it's more effective that the caps....very easy to mix a couple drops a day into Harry's food. He'd never know.

I know he's just hurting, but I'd have been less surprised if my pastor had pulled up his robes and mooned the congregation. Biting a human is sooooo out of character for any of my dogs, never mind Harry. I've had then seriously injured, really angry, everything. Yet I've only been bit if I accidentally put my hand between two fighting dogs. It's just soooo not their personality.

He's been crabby. He's also spent the day doing that bull thing with his feet? I don't know how to describe it. But it's also something he's never done. It's like testosterone has gone mad in his little system.

But he also comes to me and wants to be held all day.

I'm going to check with my regular vet on Monday. But Harry had a large cancerous tumor removed about a month or two ago? I guess my real fear is that this is some sort of indication that there is something going on. The vet said Friday he didn't see anything obvious and gave me some pain pills. But now his behavior is just worse since his first pill.

dinah,,
we have conditioned our pets to become civil..
they are animals and will forget their human mantality when they are ill..
i do believe him to be very confused between being your pet,,your love ..and being an animal in pain looking for a place to die..
i dont mean to be cruel in anyway..dinah,,maybe he is ready...?

No, no, I have a siberian husky ( a dog). I call him my son. My boyfriend and I have an ongoing joke that he isn't doing well in math right now and needs a tutor. We treat him like our son.

Pets, they don't know what's good for them and they can't tell us they're in pain.
My pussy had some teeth out- and other expensive vet billing things...Rich vetenarians!
I can't get her to take these pills!!It would be easier to push them up into her donkey.
Hope Harry gets better.
My puss is sleeping content

Dinah,

I'm sorry that he is hurting. You have had a wonderful time together. Love him and pamper him. But start preparing to let him go. I'm so sorry.

her *donkey*!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ROTFLMAO
that is sooo funny. Sorry to make light in such a thread but this nearly had me on the floor.
I cant take it when animals are suffering, you feel so helpless.
Slinky, with my cats I crush the pills to a fine powder between 2 spoons then mix with a tiny bit of cream or runny yoghurt, then suck it up in a syringe with no needle on it. Then I pry her mouth open just enough to place the end in line with the back of her throat, then squirt! Right down the throat. Takes only a second & they dont even know what's hit em!

Harry is at an age where a lot of dogs start having cognitive disfunction and senility. There are some drugs on the market that help tremendously. Talk to your veterinarian about this possibility. My husband is a vet and when I told him about harry he suggested this.

Thanks Ginger. He's pretty much back to his usual self today. Maybe in a bit of pain, but not aggressive.

I think maybe it was the narcotic pain reliever. Maybe he had a paradoxical reaction to it or something. I'll ask my usual vet tomorrow. He'll understand how out of character it was.
