Help- my doc. is being a bit Lame!

Posted by Ayla on November 9, 2003, at 16:55:11

Okay so my regular doc. (I don't have a therapist yet) gave me zoloft at first it was 25mg then 50mg now 100mg per day and it is really great for me. I was having a non-stop anxiety attack for like a month before I finally said "I have to do something about this" and went to the doc.Now I am only having anxiety attacks occasionally (out in public or at social events) but she wants to just put me on anothe AD instead of just giving me xanax (that's the one she mentioned to me) for the occasional attack and I think the zoloft is great (if only I could get her to understand the difference before and after, but nooo she says it's addictive and she does'nt like to prescribe it. I'm thinking geez does she think I like not being able to breathe, sweating, and shaking from head to toe, (and that's just the physical part!)
She said I need to go to therapy to see what the problem is, and I somewhat agree, however I feel like it is something that I inherited genetically.
I have not had a major emotional trauma in my life or public humiliation (to account for the social anxiety). My dad is bi-polar and so is his mom (grandmother - undiagnosed) and my mom's mom has had severe problems with generized anxiety same symptoms as me and I did'nt find out about any of it until I was diagnosed myself so it would'nt be phsycho-samatic (spelling?). I don't do any drugs or dring alcohol what so ever. So I think she is being a bit dicriminative because of my age (20) and it is a sliding scale health clinic so I thing they see alot of drug activity. Anyways any thoughts or ideas would be appreciated. Thanks for letting me ramble.

Ayla,

Meds can help, but often even if the cause is biological, therapy can help in addition to the meds. I know that my issues have helped me make enough of a mess of my life and relationships that therapy is needed - if only to fix the mess.

If the second AD she prescribes doesn't help, then tell her that it's not working and ask what you could do to make her more comfortable with the addictiveness of the Xanax. But maybe the other AD will help and it won't be an issue!

Her comment about Xanax being addictive may have nothing to do with whether she thinks you do drugs or alcohol. Xanax IS addictive, and if you aren't careful with it it can cause a lot of grief - even if you don't have an "addictive" personality.

It sounds to me like you aren't feeling like she is "hearing" you. And that you aren't really understanding her reasons for doing things. It really is worth the effort to try to fix those communication things. Then you'll feel like you are both on the "Let's make Ayla feel better" team.

maybe she would consider prescribing neurontin. It helps me with anxiety and bypasses all of the addictivenss issues.
It sure is hard to get stuff done in therapy if you are anxious........I have been there. Anxiety, I find, can be terribly paralyzing

Shrinks, Shrinks....Shrinks. Don't get me started.
Don't be deceived, they don't embark upon their particular career path for humanitarian reasons. They're curious. They want to see what makes you "tick". You're merely a "specimen". They're voyeurs, they want to be privy to the innermost secrets of your life, without the risk of being sent to jail with all the rest of the peeping Toms. I'm overgeneralizing, but I know of what I speak. If your shrink(s) dissapoint you, find a compassionate, sympathetic ol' regular MD to write your scripts for you. I found that they're far more "simpatico".

I did it the other way around, I started therapy then saw a doc about meds for social anxiety and depression.

It was my therapist who suggested I try meds. Right now I'm on new ADs to help me sleep, and if they don't work the doctor wants to switch me from Paxil to Wellbutrin. Whatever.

Anyway, I see a family medicine doc because I am terrified of psychiatrists. Each time I see her she asks if I'm still in therapy.

Personally, I think therapy and meds can be a good combo whether what ails you is caused by childhood trauma or genetics.

Talk to you doctor about the meds and get clear explanations about her reasons for prescribing or not prescribing them.
