Lack of sleep and the post office

Posted by NikkiT2 on October 24, 2003, at 9:30:04

So, after 2 weeks of barely sleeping I asked my GP for some sleeping pills.. she wouldn't let me have any..
The sleep I have been getting is so full of nightmares that its better not to sleep really.

So on monday I finally gave in and ordered some sleeping pills off internet.. they posted them on Tuesday.. When they still hadn't arrived today (and I hadn't received any other post either for 3 days) I called the post office.. seems all the post men and sorting offices in my area are on strike!!!

Now, I know people strike.. and I know their reasons (they want £2k a year more money!), but they have informed NO ONE.. So I have £70 worth of stuff sitting in a sorting office somewhere.

Oh joy oh joy. And they say it will be probbaly another 2 weeks before they stop striking.

So, on top of that, none of the charity mail that I recieve can get to me. None of the cheques that I have been waiting for and we desperately need to be able to pay in to the bank so we can pay our web site renewal..

It just disgusts me that they didn't inform anyone about this.

And I get to carry on in the state I am in until the post men (who earn a pretty good wage anyway for blue collar workers) deign to start working again.

Maybe I should just drink myself stupid.. do I get to sue them for turning me into an alcoholic??

Things can't be easy for you right now.

Is there a way that those who owe you checks could cancel the checks and wire the money to your account? With the post office on strike, I imagine that there are many others in the same situation as you.

As for the insomnia, I can totally relate. I haven't slept in a long time and when I ask about sleeping pills, everyone treats me like I'm an addict of some sort. The good news is that I found on the PB board that the following things can help until the mail starts going again: Melatonin, Valerian Root, Benadryl, or Unisom which are all sold over the counter - at least in the US.

Hang in there and try to stay away from the alcohol. Things will get better, I promise.

Don't forget Dramamine...

I am sorry for you problems. Are you feeling any better? There's something else I wanted to say to you. I shared a really bad time here and elsewhere with you and others. I was one of the victims, also. That was why I included the "not feeling safe" here in post a while back. I didn't want you confusing me with, well, someone else. I appreciated your support in my previous post and I do hope things get better for you. Thanks again.

Hi,

well, the cheques aren't cheques that are "owed" us.. just kind people sending us donations! And we don't know for sure what ones are there and not.. Plus, its only my area that the stupid postmen are on strike!! The rest of the country are happy with their pay!!!

And I've tried all the OTC stuff.. Zopiclone is the only thing that touches my insomnia when it gets this bad.
Plus my usual (though illegal, even for medicinal use here!!!) coping mechanism is stuck in post!!! Grrrrr!!!

Feeling happier now though.. Stood outside my house and watched the last 3 concordes fly into Heathrow.. they did a fly past over central London, and came really low over mine (I'm about 10 miles from Heathrow) was awesome.. Just annoyed that my digi camera failed so I didn't get any piccies.. hubby took some with his new camera (that he went out and bought at lunchtime just for this!), but they weren't as low over his office.. will see how they come out

Thanks

Nikki x

I don't know who you used to be.. I'm really bad at picking up the signs of this sort of thing.. But I do trust that you are not someone nasty.

*smiles*

We will feel safe again.. I believe that. I guess I will feel safer when I feel more well.. Just with head bad, and physical stuff going on as well.. everything got to me. You should see what I did to my poor pillow this afternoon!! How I will vacuum all those feathers up is beyong me!!

I really am not someone nasty at all. (well, my nails could use a manicure, but--)
I had some kind of confession, clearing the cobwebs mode this morning and since we had "spoken", I wanted you to know we had "spoken" before.(I think cleaning up my English may be the next project)
I hope the annoying (to put it mildly) phyical symptoms you are having are improving, at least a little. I think I remember you find out Thurs. on blood work. 'Til then, eat a bit and hopefully the post will straighten out? Is your mail being held somewhere you can retrieve it (I assume not, as you would have gone after it by now) or do they just hold it hostage until proper delivery by certified hands?

I get blood work results either monday or tuesday.. I have to call monday and see if they're back yet.

As for the post.. the sorting office is on strike too, so there are just piles and piles of post I guess!!

thanks for the support

Nikki

Hi Nikki..

Luckily I'm unaware of how to get sleeping pills...I'd pop them till I'm brown bread .
I'm getting anti-depressants online--finding one that may work..can't get wellburton though :-(
Doctor doesn't seem concerned.
I wondered why i got no post--I'm waiting for a cheque.
Pooooooo to PO.
Hope you get some good sleep.

One of our best mates has a 5 year old daughter.. his wife is poorely at the moment (coming off prozac for bulimia!!) so he has his daughter for the month.. Last week he moved into a new flat, and the gas people came round and fitted a card meter for him (he recently declared bankrupt, so has to pay for gas upfront.. so you buy have a card you get money put onto that you insert into your meter).. He coped till Wednesday with no heat or hot water, but with his daughter coming to stay with him, he chased to Gas people up.. Thursday still no Gas card.. they say its in post.. Friday still the same..

Turns out, his Gas card is stuck in the post, with everyone on strike, and the Gas people won't issue him another one!!! So he has him and his daughter with NO heat or hotwater!!

Its disgusting, it really is

Nikki
