hello from a newcomer

Posted by ruby on July 3, 2003, at 22:59:35

hi folks--

i'm ruby and i'm new here, just writing to introduce myself. i've been reading some of the conversations, sort of randomly picking threads to see what is happening here. it is kind of amazing to see how you all are supporting one another and finding the space to vent. it is also comforting to hear some bits of your stories and lives and to realize i'm not so whacked as i thought.

i am struggling with depression and ptsd--was sexually abused by numerous men and women, some family members, as a child...and all of this popped back to the surface after 9/11when i was basically standing at the base of the north tower when the first plane flew overhead and crashed into it.

first i was so horrified at all the evil in the world, as well as all the tradegy all around--so many broken families, lost loved ones--and that has just snowballed--it feels like the world is almost too full of pain and suffering to exist in. some days walking down the streets here in the city, i can barely stand it cause i see so much sadness and brokenness. and sometimes i just feel absolutely exhausted by it all and have to stay in bed all day just to survive. sigh. like some of you others, i self-abuse--mostly cutting.

but i have a strong, steady, caring therapist as well as a great pdoc; i'm on a cocktail of meds and haven't been helped much, still in search of help on that front.

anyway, that is a bit of me. i'm not sure how much i'll be able to participate here because all these messages seem so overwhelming but it is good to know there is a community out there struggling with similar things.

thanks all of you who have shared your suffering, and for all of you who've been encouraging and helpful...and thanks to anyone who has read this far!

welcome ruby from a fellow ptsd-er

No energy to type any more tonight but what you shared is quite amazing. Thank you for the courage it took to write that out and share that with the board.

I'm glad you have good therapist and pdoc.

There are many, many kind folks here with lots of different perspectives and helpful pieces to help you put things back into place in your life.

I'm on borrowed pc and will lord willing be back home on my pc next week sometime and will write out some more.

Best wishes dear.

hey ruby,

just wanted to say hello and thx for caring.

if you want to know about me, i'm a 27-year-old know-it-all who lives in the midwest (madison, wi). i normally think of myself as a writer, but haven't written much in the last couple months.

i deal with generalized anxiety and severe complicated migraines. but life is good, y'know? i fight back with analysis.

last time i was in nyc it was to attend (as an audience participant) the miss america pageant of 1994, i think; the year heather whitestone was selected. as part of a prize, i stayed at the waldorf. i thought people were surprisingly friendly in nyc.

Hi Ruby.

Welcome to Babble.

What an awful experience that must have been. It was traumatic enough for us who saw it on TV.

I'm glad you have a good therapist and pdoc on your side. It helps a lot.

It's good to have you here.

Hi Ruby - glad you found your way over to PSB. The folks here are great.

Thanks for sharing your story with us. That does take a lot of courage.

A little about me: 26-year-old single female in NC, working in PR, hopefully going to nursing school next fall (!!!), assuming I get my prereqs done and my head on straight. Suffer mostly from depression, some anxiety, official diagnosis is Mood Disorders NOS. I told you about my meds on Psycho-Babble.

I'm so sorry about all the S**T you've been through - no one deserves that. I'm sure you'll find many sympathetic ears here. Check in as often as you're able and as much as you need to.

And thank goodness you have a good therapist and pdoc. I'm fortunate in that area also.

Take care, and welcome again.
Penny

Hi folks--

Thanks so much for your welcome; though i'm not new to computers and the internet, I've not had much experience with these group-type things so it is all new and kind of amazing to me.

my therapist gave me his email address and i've been writing these long emails to him between sessions and he has been amazingly receptive to them as long as he doesn't have to reply....which actually has been okay after we talked through. anyway, it is nice to send out an email and get a response.

i don't know about the rest of the country, but here in new york we are once again on high alert--national guardsmen in the subway stations and on some trains, police check points, and various close-downs in response to suspicious things which we usually are not informed about. it does tend to increase one's anxiety level even when one feels generally fine about living in nyc. my four closest friends have moved out of the city since 9/11--two would have moved any way, two moved b/c of the events. that has been a huge loss for me, and when i'm so low like this it is difficult to make new friends...and difficult to depend on the few friends left...i am lucky to have one friend who "gets it" but she lives in new jersey, has 3 kids, and works full time.

anyway, there is my chat. by the way, noa, my name comes from a dream i had about me as a little girl digging deep into a trench and finding the ruby...it is something i've held on to through out this difficult time.

i hope you all find some peace this day and thanks again for your encouragement and responses.

Welcome Ruby. Just jump in anywhere. We all pretty much know what one another is going through at any given time so you'll fit right in no matter what you're going through.
best wishes

Yes; I have had large number of seemingly unusual experiences, but not lately. :D
