do I need medication

Posted by slinky on June 28, 2003, at 21:40:07

Someone said it's just a substitute for alcohol..I felt guilty for being screwed up like I was just someone who needed a fix.
Before alcohol I wasn't right..so why did this hurt me.
Lack of understanding on their part or am I using medication to escape/filter.
I'm tired of explaining the unexplainable..I'm a good listener but in this real-life situation I don't get heard.
Just whining to keep the SI demon at bay.

Lack of understanding, I'm afraid. I'm sorry you're having to put up with it. Just ignore whoever it is.

And whine away. Anything to beat the SI demons. (I've been sleeping them away. Do you think my bosses will like that strategy?)

It's a shame you don't get paid for sleeping--If that was the case I would be very very rich then spend some cash on correct meds to stay awake without yawning and needing to sleep~deeply.
The person who said about meds means a lot to me so that's why it hurt...anyway, I think he could do with medication :-)

Yeah, I figured it was someone important to you. Only people we care about have the ability to hurt us. Sometimes it seems to me that the rewards of caring about someone aren't worth the risks. And I'd rather be safe and care-free.

But then again, I'm in a mood.

If alcohol helps to stop your SI, then benzos are sure to help too. Personally, therapy is more beneficial for me but only because I dissociate before I SI- and sometimes benzos can make me dissociate more (hope that made sense). Anyway, hope you're feeling better-judy

Self Injury. Or as Shar reminds us, it can also mean Suicidal Ideation.

such a poor comparison-- you need the meds to make your brain work halfway the way it's supposed to. alcohol just plain impairs your brain's functioning. it's not the same at all.

don't give in to that ignorant remark.

I recently had somebody tell me that using meds is just a way to mask emotional neediness. thanks, j*rk.

Yes, you need medication

As I said to Shar in my post above, it's an established, medically proven FACT that mood disorders often have a biological basis, meaning brain chemistry that is NOT as it should be. When there is no psychological basis for something as severe as SI (such as sexual abuse), then brain chemistry is responsible. There is ALWAYS a reason for this type of behavior.

When someone makes a statement such as the one that upset you, this person is making a remark out of sheer ignorance. He or she is not educated in psychiatry and brain function, and is mistaken in their interpretation of "self-medicating".

Self-medication is what a person does to relieve the emotional pain caused by a psychological disorder. People with ADD such as myself often abuse stimulants from caffeine to meth. The biological reason for ADD is underactivity in the frontal lobe of the brain. That's why a stimulant is prescribed to kids that are already hyperactive, even though this would seem ridiculous to anyone unaware of the medical reason for it. The stimulant helps "fire up" the underactive frontal lobe, helping the child (or adult) gain the ability to focus and concentrate.
Unfortunately, some parents are unable or unwilling to understand this concept (or worse, it was never explained to them at all), and refuse to "medicate" their children. They BELIEVE they are doing the right thing, but what they're actually doing is depriving their child of a chance to grow up normally. So this kind of ignorance can have devestating effects - for you too.

I'm sure the person who made this remark to you believes what they are saying and meant well. Unfortunately, they haven't the slightest idea what they're talking about. In this day and age, medical technology has progressed to a degree where mood disorders can be treated with the proper medication. Don't deprive yourself of the opportunity to live a good life because of someone else's uneducated opinion.

Thanks everyone..

I slept 16? hours after valium.
I think I'll try and remember what you wrote Tabbitha for next time.
I have to wait another 2/3 weeks to get the rest of my nuerontin dose right and only have 10 valium for 6 weeks.
So I'm sensitive to things.
SI for me is suicide ideation but suppose self harm is same thing because of my feeble suicide attempts .
I'd love to not take these pills and all these supplimentsbut remembering life without them - It would be impossible.
Wishing you all well x

Thanks Gracie..

I find it difficult to articulate and justify why I am the way I am, I'm too tired and unable to explain my feelings, sometimes I just can't and that's frustrating for me so I get upset.
This person is an alcoholic but been clean for 6 years..so although he thinks he's helping he misses the point.
It's not his fault. I'll just show him some of these notes next time.
