must lose weight

Posted by Tabitha on March 22, 2003, at 0:42:12

yipes, my fatness has reached new limit. 14 lbs over normal weight. it just keeps increasing, even though I don't feel like I'm consistently overeating. spose I have to start exercising again, yuck. I damaged my knees jogging, don't think I can face the hassle of swimming again, got tired of inline skating and yoga. I only like walking, but I never lose weight from it. can't imagine myself in a gym on any of those variations of the hamster wheel. what's a chubbing-out girl to do?

dieting sucks. I just don't like exercise. I'm sedentary. Sedentary. Sedentary. and I like it that way! whine gripe complain.

Tabitha
i think the best way is to find an activity that you LIKE to do and then you get exercise without thinking about it too much.

Is there anything you like to do that youcan do?
its for your health so even if it costs money it can be very worth it. Or like do the thing that costs $ one day a week and then alternate walking (fast so youget a workout) and somethign else?

There must be something. Do you have a bike? Bikeriding is great exercise.

i wish you luck i know its hard because i exercise twice a week for 4 hours and sometimes a third for a couple hours and when im on certain meds, i still gain weight. = (

Exercise - Tabitha

You certainly didn't look overweight in the photo you posted a while back. I like Sienna's advice: find an activity you ENJOY doing, and you will be much more likely to stick with it. Do you like to dance? How about taking a class in ballet, modern dance, jazz or ballroom dancing? All of those forms of dance involve LOTS of exercise, but they don't feel like the drudgery of running on a treadmill. Moving to music is a wonderful way to exercise, and if you take ballroom dancing, you might meet someone you like!! Even if you've never taken dance before (or if you haven't taken it since you were a child), there are many organizations that offer beginning dance classes for adults. Also, keep in mind that exercise (whether swimming or dance or whatever you like) isn't just for weight loss. For me, exercise is a better antidepressant than any of the medications I've tried over the years.

If you are not losing weight from walking, consider increasing the time. I have found (experience) that walking for anything short of 50 minutes does not help me. Once I moved from 30 minutes to an hour, my weight began to fall off.

(Of course, I haven't walked since fall, but I'm doing a 45-minute walk-aerobics video called "Walk Away the Pounds," which I bought for six bucks at Target. It's kind of stupid, but it keeps me stable.)

Anyway, I think the time is the key, so try to bump up your walks to an hour, five times a week. If you can't fit it in, try two half-hour segments. I've heard it works.

I can't imagine being bored from in-line skating. It's the "Wheeeeee!" sport for me. I've been doing it since I got my first pair of skates in 1988. It's harder now that I have a child, but I used to do it five mornings a week, headphones on, dancing. It's still my sport of choice. I have a brand new pair of K2s that are super speedy and comfy. It's a beautiful day today. Hmmmm....

I came in first in my age group in a race once--nine years ago, and I was first because I was 31--one of the youngest in my age group!.

But those days are over. Now I long to be able to get up the steps without panting.

Hey Tabitha! People were talking about Mini Trampolines here a while back, I hunted one down, it was quite cheap, and its really good, you can just jump on it, jog on it and do other exercises on it too with weights. Its good too because its aerobic exercise which means you burn more fat..... I'd reccommend getting one, its not like other home gym stuff that ends up under the bed, this will stay out all year......!

Yeah, and it's too short to use it to hang your clothes!

Tabitha,

I agree about the fact that exersize can be a pain but I too find that it is the one thing that actually keeps me goings. Even on my worst days, going cyceling or running is the best part of my day.

re: your knees. I have developed "runners knee" also. There are to great ways to correct that. 1 is to have a doc that knows about running to take a look at your running shoes to see if you have uneven wear on your shoes. Most runners tend to over or unpronate, which is the way you land and tand set off again. I overpronate and just need to buy running shoes that have more "motion control"

Also, both running and walking develop the lower part of you leg with out working on the thighs and other upper part causing a pull on your knees. Alternating exersizes that develop both parts helps to "neutralize" the knees and make it a joy to get the endorphins flowing again.

Keep trying to find something you like. Hey and I never saw the posted pic...where is it??

all for now, ~tony

I loved skating for several years. Used to go out for hours, all over the streets, up and down hills (possible once you learn to brake). I got new skates (also K2s, with extra-long rails) then it just kind of burnt out.

I think that might be part of the sudden impulse to shed pounds. I've had no interest in sex for so long... now for some reason I'd like to look better naked. Maybe it's the med reduction, sex drive is up, I look in the mirror and am appalled at the plumpness. I don't carry extra weight very well.

Good reason, Tabitha! Doesn't it feel great to feel alive again? But are you sure you aren't distorting a bit on the weight? You really didn't look heavy at all in your photo.

But exercise can make you feel better anyway. My husband has started going to the gym twice a week (hey, good idea, men there - but not my husband!) to work out, and has also been watching what he eats. He's really proud that he now actually weighs what it says on his license. And he's so cute. He's trying on his pants to see which ones now fit. :)

I'm a wee bit worried because he went through an anorexic phase in college, but that was a long time ago.

But he feels great, is more relaxed, and happy as heck. Go figure. I used to go to aerobics three times a week and it never made me feel that way, just tired and crabby.

it's only 14 lbs, but enough to make me start dressing differently, trying to conceal the midsection, and I had to buy bigger jeans. feels so middle aged. I had an anorexic phase too, but I over-exercised instead of starving. my pictures from that time look awful! I don't ever want to be that thin again. problem isn't just extra weight, it's just that it keeps going up, slowly. I just think I need to exercise to keep a stable weight, so I don't have to fight with dieting.

remember my whole thing with saying hi to men in the coffee shop? I spotted one today, guy I've seen around, he walked by my table and I brazenly said hello. we chatted about the book I was reading and exchanged names. now I'm totally planning to seduce him ;-) little does he know.
