Can't STAND video games anymore..anyone else??

Posted by jay on March 11, 2003, at 15:34:14

I don't know what the problem is. Mind you I am in a fairly nasty depressive/anxious "funk", but they either frustrate me or I feel REALLY "icky", especially after playing some of those horrible, nasty violent games. Maybe I have just become such a "peaceful" person that aggressive and violent games really, really bother me. Mind you, I also *hate* watching that stuff in movies, and never do. I always watch really depressing movies like "City of Angels" and "What Dreams May Come".

Can someobdy explain ME to, uhhh, ME, please..:)

Thanksyouss very much,
Jay

Hmmmmmmm......... Not enough information. But I'll hazard a thought or three. Video games: perhaps you have been/are "obsessed" with them, while at the same time feeling "guilty" that they drive you so. I know that I (with OCD) will fixate on certain things for awhile, then feel "guilty" about doing them. Then I work on stopping that thing, and replacing with something more "healthy". My latest vice was eBay. I was just pissing away money on "stuff" that I really did not need. Although I have been a collector of stuff for almost 35 years, there are better things I need to do with my money. These "things we do" such as binge eating, gambling, shopping excessively etc....are just diversions to keep up from thinking about our "problems". Even these ot similar boards can be a way of diversion. You did not mention if you were/are seeing a counselor or if you are medicated or self-medicating. These things would be helpful to know for any of us to proffer any salient assistance to you. So, open up and spew forward young man! Let us share what's up with you.

Well, I honestly have never really even liked them, and I despise violence in movies, etc. I guess it's just these new video games, which I just recently tried one of, even freaked me out more because they are so graphic and sick! I come from quite a non-violent and pacifist background, so it's no surprise this stuff bothers me.

Well, I live a pretty docile life, spend most of my time reading and writing about peace and social-political issues for a non-profit online e-zine. There just ain't much to, uhhh, "spew"!..heh. I have started another new medication regiment to hopefully get me more "active" in life, and yeah I am going to be entering both CBT and Interpersonal Therapy. (A more short-term, goal focused type of psychotherapy.)

So, hey, there ya go.

Jay, maybe you could play Sims or some kind of world simulation game instead. I don't think Sims can shoot each other unless you make them.
