Song stuck in your head? You're not alone

Last Updated: 2003-02-24 13:01:02 -0400 (Reuters Health)

By Alison McCook

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - The vast majority of people say they have been mentally tortured at one point in their lives by a song that keeps
repeating itself over and over in their heads.

And new research shows that people most frequently plagued by this phenomenon are those with slightly neurotic tendencies, and people who
enjoy and listen to music often.

These mental broken records are also more likely to play the first or last song we hear in different situations, such as the first song that comes on
in the morning alarm, or the last song playing before we turn off the car, study findings show.

Yes, xmas songs are a problem. Notice how it's never a good song that gets 'stuck'?
I get a lot of commercial jingles in my head--

You don't even have to know the words to get one of these things stuck in your head.

The problem I have is that I like listening to new CDs until I know them, so I awaken at 3:00 a.m. singing U2 or Ani Difranco or Tori Amos. And while I like it when it's on the CD player, it's not so nice when it's two or three lines, repeating, repeating, at 3:00 a.m.

I am fortunate that I don't have the problem of not being able to get rid of an endlessly repeating song in my head, but sometimes I will be unconsciously humming a tune or singing a song, or it will run in my head, and when I become aware of it, I ask myself why that song? Usually there is some wierd preconscious association to something relevant in my life at the moment, from the utterly mundane to somewhat profound, but it is so weird how I was singing the song and not even realizing that I was, and totally unaware of any conection until I deliberatly think about it!

Once, when I was totally stuck on how to write an essay for school, I had this experience with a song that was coming to me several times over a few days, and then I asked myself about why that song, and it led me to how to write the essay.

How about loving music but having a lousy auditory memory? I'll get just part of the song stuck in my head & it'll get on a certain note & recycle back over & over - about two lines worth.

I read something Dave Berry (Barry?) wrote years ago. He asked why can't we remember the nice songs we want to, but get the annoying commercial jingles stuck instead?

Sometimes it's so automatic that I know I've counted up to 35 (for example), yet I have no idea what I was counting!

We're in good company: the composer "Anton Bruckner" suffered from the same obsession.

Not madness, but an attempt to control anxiety.

I don't know why I had the idea that you prefer odd numbers; this message is 32 words.
