Coffee, Slugs, and Gardens

Posted by IsoM on June 29, 2002, at 2:17:30

I figured the subject line might make a few wonder. I hope it's okay for the social board but has nothing to do with psychology. For you gardeners out there troubled by slugs & snails, you might find this interesting:

Just one more of the regular gems I get from my online science sites. :-)

That's so great to know, Iso. I always have coffee in the car and end up throwing out the dregs onto some landscaping plants somewhere. Now I'll do so in good conscience.

One can never have enough anti-snail remedies. My favorite is using sweetgum pods around plants they like -- the pods are prickly and the snails won't cross them. I have a sweetgum tree that drops a whole dumpsterload of pods each year.

It's also fun to just throw the slimy pests out into the street. Die, snails, die!

That' SO funny! It's what I do - throw handfuls into the street. One day I'd picked a large cottage cheese container full of snails & then threw them into the street. As I was crouched behind some shrubs, continuing to weed, a group of young boys came along the sidewalk. It was so much fun to listen to them ooh & aah at all the snails on the street & listen to them hypothesize how they got there. It was such a wonderful mystery to them, I didn't bother to tell them the truth.

Maybe I should pay postage & you could send me out a shipment of the sweet gum pods. ;-)

Superslugs huh? Yuck. Reminds me, once I heard there's a place in northern California (or was it Oregon or Washington?) where they have big yellow slugs they call banana slugs. So they started an annual Banana Slug Festival, with slug races, and a slug recipe contest. One of the entrants I remember was Slugs in Aspic. Eeewww!

...yes, we really do - huge 3"-4" slugs! I live in the Pacific Northwest so know what those things are. I wish I could post images here, I've got a very funny one of a snail escaping on a little scooter from a dish of escargot with bits of parsely still stuck to him. I have absolutely no sympathy for slugs & snails, though snails at least look nice.

Gaaaa! So they really do exist? Our snail problems here must be miniscule compared to anyplace such creatures could thrive.

I'd love to see the snail pic. If you would not mind emailing, send it to silverfish2 at aol dot com.

I agree, snails are better looking than slugs. Plus their shell makes a good handle to grab onto when flinging them into the street ;-)

Yup, we gotz em. I'm also in the Pac. Northwest and was on a little hike yesterday and saw so many... had to keep watching out for them on my trail. They are huge... I think there was one that was 5" yesterday. They like the rainforest atmosphere.

Oh come on. They're really cute!

Being from the Northeast where we like our wildlife small I was amazed the first time I saw a banana slug.

I know they're cute, snails even more so but I'm still not fond of them. I loved the chocolate slugs though! I thought it was a joke at first - like chocolate covered slugs, but their idea's sweet - hope it sells well. Your links to other photos were really nice. I do find them fascinating but feel very murderous when I go to check a favourite plant & find it mostly eaten.

Actually, banana slugs aren't bad at all (they're native), but it's the invader slugs that have come from diff countries on plants & bulbs that cause the most damage. Even a bunch of those little guys can eat an entire plant in one night.

If anyone's interested, this site has info on controlling slugs & snails:
