Kid A: Radiohead Delivers

Posted by trouble on March 26, 2002, at 13:11:42

Wow, nothing on my stereo but OK computer for the last 3 days, I had no idea, we're talkin Boss like Hot Sauce, especially the last 2 tracks, and I don't even know all the lyrics yet, but the way it keeps me from crying is impressive, you know? Music ever make you feel like that, that you want to cry, get just so close but no closer, it's a teetering sensation and it's good.
Anyway, are all their albums this deep? I heard they can be all o'er the map stylistically, and am lookin for more like this. Recommend away!

thanks,
trouble

here is a capsuel review of their albums, i've painstakingly collected all of them on vinyl, as for any besides, id say just about all of them are top notch work...

1993. Pablo Honey. (the title comes oddly enough fro a Jerky Boys prank fone call, which can also be heard on the track "How do You?" Lots of competing guitar work here, some shoegazer bsides like Coke Babies, etc... still a really good record with lots of variation in the songs.

1995. The Bends. the band is stilll rocking it, w/ three guitars and a heavy heavy drum section, this album has its quiet sides too, like Fake Plastic Trees + Street Sprit (fade out)

1997. ok computer, you know what this one sounds like, i think you can really see a turning point in the band here, moving towards a much more abstract landscape of sound...

2000. Kid A. this album was almost lauded as much as it was praised... nobody could deside exactly how original the band had become... the guitars are ditched for laptops, johnny starts playing with the Ondes Martinet...there is no decipherable singing untill around track 4 ...in my humble opinion it marks some of their finest work to date, though i will always have a soft spot in my heart for OK COMPUTER

2001 Amnesiac. this album was recorded at the same time of KID A and sounds quite similar to it's sister album... Personally between the two I think Id take Amnesiac over Kid A, just for its sheer oddness, but you can mix and match the two albums for nearly two hours of pure musical bliss... great album indeed. They should have made Cut tooth an inclusion to this album istead of a bside and ditched the new version of Morning Bell, which could have shown up on a Pyramid Song B side... just my opinion though...

Hey guys sorry to pop in uninvited- I had no idea
they did Kid A at the same time as Amnesiac (or maybe I just forgot?) Sorry- that was soo bad...but actually i think that it sounds much more like Ok Computer...wish I had them in front of me so i could cite the two songs in particular- as soon as I heard Amnesiac I thought I heard the same melody even, as a song from Ok. Kid A was a much harder listen for me. I tried, damnit...then I just felt like if it took me anymore work it just wouldn't be entertainment anymore...too much of a wuss maybe.

Kid A- I'm interested to hear how you think Amnesiac and Kid A sound similar- you obviously are more familiar with these guys than I...

I've never seen them live or even on a talk show- I know they made the rounds a while back on the Amnesiac tour...

you guys have great taste !!
kid a, i agree they should have ditched the other version of morning bell it wasn't really necessary. i also think they should have ditched that recording of motion picture soundtrack. have you heard the live recording of thom doing that song just with his guitar ? it was THE most beautiful thing ever, and my FAVOURITE radiohead song, then they completely utterly destroyed it. that's what i think anyway.
rock on !!

They are similar in that they were done nearly at the same time. Amnesiac does seem to veer back towards traditional composition with songs like Knives Out, easily the most accessable track on the whole album, the "National Athem" of Amnesiac if you will...

Where their paths cross you have songs like Kid A's "Kid A", and Amnesiac's "Pulk/Pull Revolving Doors" where the vocals are utterly distorted and the music stears clear of the typical rock ensamble sound of their earlier work...

Mostly, I think, the band considers the two works to be a whole entity... They may be seperate albums but in the band's image they exist as one session...

>i also think they should have ditched that recording of motion picture soundtrack.

I think they should have recorded a studio version of Like Spinning Plates as it was performed live... It also would have been nice to have True Love Waits on Amnesiac rather than as a Live track... but maybe thats where they want that track to be, live...

all in all i cant wait to hear what they come up with next...
