A very weird question for psb....

Posted by Kristi on January 27, 2002, at 11:36:09

Hi.
I know, what does this have to do with mental issues... but I have to ask cuz I can't find anything on the net yet.
A guy I work with(also a very good friend) has found blood in his semen(when he ejaculates)...... he's just ignoring it because he's scared. Any idea what this could be? I kind of doubt it's sexual in nature... he's almost sixty and it's my understanding he hasn't been with a woman in many many years. But he's very very depressed yet still won't see a doctor. What could this be????????
Any suggestions would help. Thanks guys, Kristi

He needs to see a doctor. Obviously. The problem is him plucking up the courage.

I dont know what the provision is where you are, but most countries have helplines you can ring up anonymously with health problems, run by health agencies or charities. Is there one he can contact?
This could give him a halfway step to talking thru his fears.

One way of looking at it for this sort of thing is for him to try to imagine his relief if he goes to the doctor and finds its no problem/something minor and easy to clear up. If he can really get into imagining the relief, that could help motivate him. He cant know at this stage what they will say- but its not inevitably whatever he is afraid of.
And it does sound like the kind of symptom which wont be possible to diagnose without seeing a doctor- there's probably a load of possible reasons.

But sympathies to him - and it does take a lot of courage to make that appointment..

Fi

I can't really answer that. :-) It took me about 2 weeks to find out what's wrong with him. He's an intensely private guy. I know him and Willy spend private time together.... since he isn't with a woman. :-)

That's the biggest problem. The embarrasement I guess he'll get from admitting to his doctor that he masturbates.

All he has to say that he woke up and he was dreaming of some luscious beings and he noticed the blood. Might save his pride.

Sometimes the best things ...
(Well i don't need to go there.)

And a woman could NEVER do such things to him? < g >

I'm sure you can convince him to be honest to his doctor; for his sake and possibly yours?

Yeah... I think I can..... for his sake (and mine, in the fact that I care about him.... he's more of a father figure to me)

Hi Kristi--

Your friend is of an age when prostatic hypertrophy (enlargement) is a common condition. If present, this may relate to his symptom, and may also factor into his reluctance to see a urologist. (The rectal exam necessary to palpate the prostate gland is even less fun than the gynecologic exam for Pap smear.)

In this age group there are also a few remnants of that traditional male attitude that going to *any* doctor is a sign of weakness incompatible with their gender.

BTW, health professionals taking a history will presume that any pt. without a S.O. "flies solo" unless "grounded" by meds or physical condition. Urologists generally are quite adept at discussing potentially sensitive concerns in a low key, matter-of-fact, non-threatening manner.

Hope you can convince your friend to see the doc; odds are pretty high that he'll survive it.

Well wishes--medlib
