Chat

Posted by kiddo on November 6, 2001, at 22:14:18

I've been trying to find a decent chat to put on the website(for the babblers on last night)-I can't log on to yahoo again tonight. There is one right now but it's so basic, it's almost sickening. I found one that was really cool-it was 1,300.00, can you BELIEVE that???

There's another one that has a few more options, but nothing terrific and no emoticons...

If anyone is interested in using the current one until I get a new one, let me know and I'll post it.

MSN has a chat that has all the bells and whistles and it seems to be relatively painless, but I play with computers all day and find most of them pretty easy to use and may not be the best judge...

Birds of a feather..... If it works, stable, and has all the bells and whistles, sounds good to me. Do you have to become a member to use it? I hate MSN on that factor. Care to provide more info?

Yeah, you do have to be a member, or have a passport as they call it... But before I talk in any detail about it I'd like to do some more looking around. Unfortunately I'm at work right now (being very productive as you can see) and we have a firewall that keeps me from accessing the MSN chat area. I get home about 3pm PST and would be glad to check it out then and get back to you with some details then if you like (probably by 4-4:30 or so). I think once you get past the membership hassles of MSN, the chatroom is one of the more functional and reliable that I've seen.

Be glad to help if I can.

I'm down to my last two packs of the Ultra-Lights, then I start by going from a pack a day to 15 a day for a week, then to ten, etc. I'm really hoping for the best, I've been smoking since I was 14 and I know this isn't going to be easy. Willpower isn't a word easily found in my personal dictionary... But I figure if I can quit drinking for 14 years, I can stop smoking right?

I'll be calling on you for some serious kicks in the ass when I start getting weak...

Did you go back to work yet? If so, how's it goin'?

It is a very nice setup when it is working. The only problem is the other 75% of the time. You were right. Of course if the only other alternative is MS anything we've really got a problem. - Jane

Hi ALL,

I have been hunting too (ha ha a MOUSE HUNTING!!)and looked a delphi and ivillage and it looks like they are all pretty simple (no emotions). At delphi i started something called a forum called babble5 (anyone remember babylon five series??)i think and it has a chat page to it that i made 'private' but then, i need to 'invite' you to it by email, so it isn't anony mouse. Through the grapevine i have heard Yahoo may be going bankrumpt...so is this why they are having trouble?

Maybe should we stick around for a while?

I, for one of us, appreciate and have appreciated Jane and Greg's offer to help with the tech side, as I am at MOST a total CLUESS mouse re what would be good, other than trying it out...we could have something like a rotating potluck, go to different places each week, to try them out...but then we we all have to register at each place oh,no no...what to do?

Greg and Jane sounded like they can tell by looking at it what one would be best...maybe we should try one?

I will be available thursday between sixish and 9ish pacific time...

Oh, no, does this mean drdashbob is going to send this discussion to admin??????

If you want to check out one of the demo chats, I can get this one on my site. I can customize it a little, but no emoticons or whatever...has a lot of stuff, like an auditoriom (sp?) for guest speakers, complete with audience, platform, etc. No banner ads, or other stuff.

Let me know?

Of course, no apologies necessary... I blame no one except Yahoo. I don't know why I've always hated the site... (I know, hated is such a strong word) Maybe all the ads constantly in one's face, maybe the generic atmosphere, the design, look, feel - Still, I've used it a lot as a search engine in the past, and found many answers to my questions. Now I use Google almost exclusively for info on anything.

You're right about having to deal with MicroSoft at some point, I'm afraid. It's so "everywhere," isn't it? All-knowing, all-seeing, Bill Gates, yuk.

Why don't we look at the site Kiddo suggests in the previous post? And we all can keep trying to find a site that's dependable, user-friendly, and cheap. (!?!) It'll at least be a good research project, and we depressives can say we at least did SOMETHING today (to the admonishing spouses)...

Speaking of which, Kelly, where are you? (Krazy Kat).

Best to you, Jane, and other would-be, hopeful chatters,

Wendy

kiddo,

This looks great to me. I didn't follow up on the MSN thing cause it seemed like some of the others had some issues with Mr. Gates :)

No-there's no charge, and no software to install. It's an extension of my website.
