BORDERLINES

Posted by Andre Allard on January 10, 2001, at 14:30:46

I never see anyone writing about borderline personality disorder. Is it because you are ashamed? I could write that I feel like blowing my head off and I would not be ashamed of admiting to it on this board.

I am most likely borderline as I meet 8 of the 9 criteria so I would like to here experiences of any borderlines on this board. I sure could tell ya an experience or two.

Andre
I meet 8 of the 9 criteria too but have never been diagnosed borderline. The criteria seem to apply to more than just borderline personality disorder. They overlap to other disorders too.
Hmm. Wonder if I should look into this.
I find all of the criterion of "mental" disorders are very similar. It's hard to distinguish between disorders when the criteria is so vaguely general.
Have you ever actually investigated the possibility that you suffer from borderline personality disorder with your doctor?

I thought I had BPD once and mentioned it to my pdoc. He laughed. Really. He asked me why I believed it and I mentioned all of the symptoms I have which match the profile. He said that probably 80% of the general population has symptoms that match the criteria; it is the DEGREE to which the criteria are met which makes the diagnosis. I still believe I have *weak* BPD, but I believe my pdoc is right: The criteria are really too general.

A diagnosis is as useful as it is useful.

If conceptualizing your symptoms as borderline personality disorder, or any other disorder, helps you to feel understood, or helps to point to the direction for treatment options, then it is helpful.

If it feels like an accusation, then it is not.

Diagnoses are constructs---ways to conceptualize what is observed. Ways to try to make sense of what is going on for you.

They are not "real" objects or entities perse. For some dx's there is growing reasearch that validates that the dx matches a "real" phenomenon in the brain (I am thinking of schizophrenia, for instance) but many are still somewhat speculative, and many are still dynamic---the definitions are likely to continue to evolve, to be revised every so often.

Still, they can be useful--to try to understand what is going on for someone, and to try to figure out what might help.
