Group Therapy?

Posted by InsideOut on June 25, 2009, at 2:19:17

I am considering group therapy. I am already in individual therapy, - weekly basis for the last 4 years.

Is there anyone that is in group therapy (as well as individual work)?

What is the experience like of being in group therapy? Is there anything that it can offer that individual therapy is unable to offer?

Any other thoughts, experiences etc regarding group therapy?

Oh andif I suffer from irritability should I even be considering it?!

One time years ago was in both and liked the group as got to hear others stories and since I isolate it got me with other people for a while. So it could be helpful. Phillipa

I'm in group and individual therapy. Group provides a totally different kind of experience. For me, telling about sa is still next to impossible, so group is a safe place to practice being OK with my own history. I also hear other people's stuff and practice dealing with triggers. I have a female therapist as a group leader and a male individual therapist. They have different styles and elicit different things from me.

I think it can be helpful. It can also be a struggle. I think it sort of depends what irritates you and if you need to practice coping with those feelings. I definately wouldn't do it without talking to your current therapist.

Group therapy is great. I was in a psychotherapy type group therapy. My therapist and her colleague conducted it. She sat on one end and he sat on the other end of an oval shaped seating. This was the best place for me to learn how other people perceived me. The main goal of this group was to learn about yourself and how you relate to others so that you could have better relationships with people outside of group. The group was supposed to bond and grow with each other. We learned from each other. We did our own psychoanalysis of each other. The two therapists guided the group and often would give their thoughts and ideas on what was going on. It was a very interesting experience. I think everyone should be in group therapy. If the world were and if the world learned from it, the world would be getting a long a whole lot easier.

Thank you for the feed back.

I did speak to my therapist about joining the group. He thinks it to be a sign of progress. And so now it will be to make an appointment with the group therapist to see if I am at the stage that he has in mind for the group. I do hope so! Now that I have considered it I would be disappointed if it doesnt happen.
