Has anyone ever mistaken you for a therapist?

Posted by Tabitha on May 16, 2009, at 2:28:54

Just got asked on another board if I was a therapist, by another therapist who thought my posts sounded therapist-y. The disturbing thing is, it's a topical board, not a support group, so I wasn't trying to talk in therapy talk, if you know what I mean. Yipes. I don't know how I feel about this. Now I'm afraid it's screamingly obvious I've had way too much therapy :)

yep. have been asked that from time to time in many diff. settings.

after so many years of therapy and so many books it would be odd if our way of communicating didn't reflect some aspects of that particular language style.

don't think of it as screamingly obvious you've had too much therapy but instead you could try framing it as you're exceptionally well versed in helpful ways of communication. = )

try to look at it as a compliment. perhaps this therapist was threatened by your ease w/ language or maybe she feels a sense of being the resident therapist member of that board (despite it not being a support board) and doesn't want any competition. *grin*

take pride in your abilities to be an effective communicator.

I had to grin at this, Tabitha. Too much therapy but apparently really good therapy. :)

Part of the contribution to this question could be your experience with boards as well - you've learned how to negotiate, in writing, all the potential pitfalls of posting, no matter what the purpose of the forum.

I like Zen's answer. And of course, the correct therapuetic response to this question, would be, "What would it mean to you if I was?"

Hey zen, thanks for helping me find the bright side :)

Regarding her motives-- I think she was just trying to be friendly & connect, like "hey I'm a therapist, are you one too" type of thing.

Me too. I have to be careful or I sound pedantic because I have a master's in psychology and I end up using psychologese to talk about issues and approaches and etc.

I think you should take it as a compliment too. It means you're thoughtful and communicative and insightful. Those are all really good things.

It's OK, your inner paranoid skeptic is only trying to keep you safe. Give it a pat on the head and a cookie.
