Logic vs. Emotion...Knowledge vs. Understanding

Posted by AMF on February 22, 2009, at 23:06:18

Does anyone get frustrated when emotion over rides logic and you have knowledge but it's not enough to understand what is going on? I find I know the right words and can think clearly about my life until my emotions get in and then all logic goes out the window. My T knows how frustrating this is for me and we can laugh about it at times. I remember one time when we were discussing something and I felt exposed and grabbed the throw he had on the couch...trying to act cold :)...he said it works best if you just cover your head. We laughed and both knew my emotions were a mess and I'm trying to stay logical enough to at least tell him what had happened. Is this frustrating to anyone else?

yeah, my head works pretty well a lot of the time
my emotions are another story...

to feel something is very different from thinking about something, and there's a lot of the work for me

I tend to let my intellect override my emotions, and that's why therapy has been so hard for me. I have difficulty accessing the most painful emotions, so I give you a huge amount of credit for being open to your emotions.

All the logic in the world won't heal us. It's those darned emotions that keep getting in the way, and until we master them, well, it's tough.
