Sleeping therapist

Posted by Trident on November 12, 2008, at 14:04:08

Well, I wish I had found this board earlier when I was considering leaving my previous therapist. I had been seeing him for about 5 years and decided to leave him only after he fell asleep on me! Has this ever happened to anyone else? I was really upset when it happened - he apologized, but I never was able to trust him fully after that. He never fell asleep again, but he would very frequently look very tired and his eyelids would droop almost to the point of nodding off. Now that I'm seeing someone new, I've realized there were other signs that I should have left sooner - frequently late to appointments and over a year behind in billing. I still have no idea how much I owe him - I would ask periodically and he always said he'd get to it but never did. I'm sure one of these days I'll get a whopper of a bill in the mail....

Anyways, all this is just to say to trust your gut instinct. It was very difficult to leave someone I'd been seeing for so long, but ultimately the right decision.

Thanks for that » Trident

I agree.
Boards such as this are a great thing because therapy is just one on one and can get off track.
This is a place where we can question what goes on, with others who are in the same situ.

Trident,

if you search the archives you will find threads on this very subject. I have had this issue, I gave my therapist heck about this. He says he has sleeping problems and is often sleepy. Still pisses me off. But ok, its a health issue. He really tries hard not to do it and I am suppose to call him on it. We now have a process where if I am talking and he starts looking sleepy I stop talking and he then stops Go figure not sure why that works. But several hear over the year have talked about this.

It happens. Not often I guess but happens.

They are human.

Hi Trident,

Sounds like you made the right decision. I suspect that if there were not those other signs, the sleeping incident wouldn't have driven you from a therapy that was going well. It sounds like maybe he has either personal problems or health problems, maybe he's depressed or on some medication? But not billing you for a year? Now that is really unusual!

Glad you're happy with the change. And welcome, look forward to hearing more from you.

Best,

Lucie

I had to laugh at this and I am so sorry, but I used to FREAK OUT when I heard my T yawn. She did not do it much, but everytime I would get upset. She would tell me that it is not me, that she was up late, etc, etc,...but I used to take it so personally.

If any T fell asleep on me, I would stick their hand in water and quit! I am so sorry this happened to you, but it is not uncommon.

I am amazed you can look at your T in the face to tell. I can't look at my T and would probably never know if T fell asleep unless T snored.
A yawn I can here...a quiet snooze....ooooohhhh....
