I know this sound like I am a mean person but

Posted by lemonaide on August 30, 2008, at 13:29:28

I am not going to my grandson's 3rd birthday tomorrow. He won't know since we don't see him as much and well I just can't take my husband's ex wife and that step daughter from hell either. Plus there is this crazy aunt of my step daughter, (husbands ex wife's sister) that drives me crazy.
She knows I am studying for psychology and well she is a LMSW, and thinks she knows everything. Well also she believes she can speak in toungues and that just freaks me out, she did it around baby Lia when she was alive. She said that Lia was talking to her, etc.
So, I am going to take care of myself and stay home. I need the time along anyway and I don't need anymore stress. I was going to ask my T what he thinks, but decided to make the decision myself. I have had enough to deal with this week, so does this make me a bad grandma? It isn't like he knows who I am yet, so I hope it will be okay.

No it doesn't make you a mean person. You do what you need to do for you.

I did not go to my niece's wedding for some extenuating circumstances because I just couldn't deal with it. My t agreed.

You keep yourself safe.

Do not feel bad. In such a situation, you would end up feeling worse going. Perhaps you could make arrangements some other time somehow to see him. It sounds like there are too many people there that would make this a place you do not belong at. When certain, several family members bad mouthed my husband and I , I have since withdrawn from family get togethers on a larger scale. They all judge me for my mental illness and have no idea really what is going on. They did not bother to be there for me, when I really needed them when things were so bad at home. This one time will not hurt your grandson. If you want to be a bigger part of his life, that is something you will have to figure out how to do without putting yourself in such an uncomfortable situation. Self-preservation is very important.

Have a good Sunday
Chelle

Careful about categorizing all those people so much, you're soundy really judgmental and I'm sure you wouldn't want that. Remember how you look at them is what you invite back, so one teensy step at a time if you can't go, you can always make up for it in another way with your grandson maybe a few days hence? Some special time just the two of you, and then you won't have to deal with any adults you don't want to see. I totally understand how it is to feel stressed by people you don't like very much.

You are right Susan, I reread my post, and I do sound judgmental. That is why T's shouldn't do therapy with family, right? lol

I suspect you're right, lol.
But do let your love for your grandson show, don't let all those difficult personalities stop you from enjoying your life. This is YOUR LIFE, not theirs.
