Attached to your T....Are you????

Posted by Looney Tunes on July 27, 2008, at 14:57:17

Do you believe you are attached to your T?

If so, what makes you think that? What does that mean to you? What did T do to faciliate that?

If not, why?

Personally, I had one T I believe I was attached to. She was very consistent, caring, strong, and responsive. I think she faciliated the attachment to make therapy work.

Other than her, I have not attached to anyone.

Yes

> If so, what makes you think that?
My old one, i would look forward to seeing him and think about him all week and think about being able to do stuff with him...just like watch a movie, or him giving me a hug...or talking to me...anything! Ialso named my teddy bear after him...i think it's my best friend. it gives me more comfort than anything.

What did T do to faciliate that?

I think it's just because it was the first time i actually had somebody to talk to about how i felt who seemed to care.

He didn't really have to do anything to facilitate it.

But my current counselor isn't always as serious in session and tells stories about himself sometimes...also, he seems kind of Arrogant...i was attached to him at first...but he told me he wanted to send me somehwere else and that he doesn't want to see me as often...he's also not always helpful in responding to my questions....i think i'm still kind of attached, but i also don't like him...he definitely doesn't get a stuffed animal named after him

I am. He imprinted on me like a mother duck on ducklings. Any other therapist would fall short because however wonderful they might be, they wouldn't be him.

Darned if I know what he did. His more endearing qualities weren't all that evident during the imprinting stage. The poor man was probably quite at a loss to see me attach to him like a barnacle.

I hate to get all mystical or anything. But maybe it was just chemistry. Something in him filling some need in me. Something more about how he felt than what he did or said.

Yes, I am absolutely attached to my T. I get terribly upset by the thought that he might abandon me, and I have told him I love him in a fatherly way. One of the issues we are working on is attachment, in fact, because trusting people is a HUGE issue for me. I really want a romantic relationship since I'm 22 (no asks me that enough, I actually had to go calculate that) and have never even kissed a guy. But trust issues are really getting in the way of that.

Sunnydays not to get off topic but you are still very young there is so much time for you to get romantically involved. It must be distressing to you though if others you know are romantically involved. Sorry to divert the thread. Phillipa

Looney,
I am so very attached. I think it has to have something to do with my readiness to work on my attachment issues (as well as other related issues like desire, love, boundaries, self-esteem). It's like the timing is right and my T and I just click. However, I also think it has a tremendous amount to do with her and what she facilitates.

I have never spent so much time with anyone who can listen like she can - and who hears and sees me like she does. She has a remarkable ability to remember just about everything I tell her. She listens to my language and belief systems and immediately incorporates them into the way she talks to me (making me feel "special" and important to her). She is supportive, empathetic, and loving without directly saying too much about her caring for me. Instead I think she tries to show it with her verbal actions. She is consistent. She is present without taking over or talking too much. She pushes me without pushing me too much. She seems ever-patient and calm.

I just love being around her because it makes me feel so good. That feels a little selfish sometimes just to take it all in and have it all be all about me. But it is so incredibly freeing! It doesn't hurt the attachment that I find her so attractive.

Her positive voice is starting to creep in and take the place of the negative internal voices. Each week I just can't wait to see her...

I am not too attached to my T. I've never been one to really attach to people, well except for Dr. Bob. That is kind of strange. LOL

I don't usually miss my T/pdoc. I seem to miss her only when something bad happens and I want to talk to her to feel better. Other than that, I don't usually think of her.
